As is works fine for me, if we had lots of tech issues to work thru I would vote differently but it's a Super Tenere....watch the CCT, keep your spokes tight, done.
Hell, I might prefer merging tech, mod and discussion. Make these a one stop shop....

I want to start putting a little more rigor around the categorization of the Technical section. This section is really the heart of the forum, because it is arguably the most useful.

I'm thinking that I should create a bunch of sub-boards under the technical section to make it easier to categorize the information. What say all of you?

Some ideas:

"Engine"
"Suspension"
"Wheels/Tires"
"Wiring/Electronics"
...

What say all of you?
If you add stickies for the best threads on a given topic it would be a huge hit IMHO! That way a great thread with pictures outlining how to remove the rear wheel (for instance) would be right on top of the page. A good subject line is must here....

Some guys here put a lot of effort into their threads including some great pics etc, a sticky is a big pat on the back.

This topic actually does not apply to me. ::)

Why? Because I'm a hopeless addict to this forum for many years now.
So much so that I have read almost every post. All of them.

Sadly, I have actually responded to near all of them too. (a bit of an exaggeration. But only a bit)

Therefore, for me, please don't kill yourself organizing. I don't need to "find" anything. I already lived it. :)
(and newbies asking questions bothers me not the least)

We have so many stickied how to threads the front page is full. How about a dedicated how to?
In theory I really like the idea, but threads tend to wander quickly. In practice, we have a lot of topics which start out as a discussion about XYZ on the bike, then somebody does a "how to" with photos, and then the thread wanders off into a discussion of whale farts or something.
While I am usually the one trying to keep topics in one thread, it'd be hard to cut threads apart to keep the DIY sections somewhat focused, and the search function really does work well.

As far as the stickies, trying to clean them up is one of my future goals, probably for when the winter comes and we are stuck indoors again. I'd like to create sub-headings, so the tire threads can go under one, wind management and windshields beneath another, etc.

CW, you're such a gentleman. You just described the difficulty that someone like me causes. God made folks like you to clean up the messes that folks like me make. ???

Would it make sense to start separating 201x-2013 from 2014-201y specific information? Topics which are common to both generations could stay in a common location.

After discussing splitting into sub-boards for a long time, the process has begun. Sorry for all of the links now starting with "Moved" but we now have what should be most of the wheel, tire, and disc, threads moved into a sub-board of the Technical area.

Electrical and Instruments will probably be next.

When Venture created the forum, he was guessing at how to create natural divisions in subjects and it's done pretty well for the last four years. At this point though, you can find info about most any of the physical motorcycle subjects (crash bars for example) on all of the following four boards:
General
Technical (Which now has nearly a full page of stickies)
Modifications
Accessories.

The natives are getting restless, as we get pm's with suggestions and requests to clean things up. Venture proposed splitting Tech into sub-boards at the beginning of this thread and we have now done so with Tires/Wheels/Discs as a first shot. Below are the additional proposed new Tech sub-boards for your thoughts and input.

As with the tires sub-board, each would use TrikePilot's idea of a continually modified and updated "Cliff's Notes" as the first sticky. That way, new guys in the future would be able to simply open the Oils & Fluids sub-board to get the sticky on how to change their oil for the first time. As with the new Tires list, the concept is that a member keep updating the content of that first post, occasionally providing it to the moderators to replace the existing post. All of us will eventually move on to some other bike, so each of these is meant to be a resource without individual "ownership" that outlasts any of us individuals.

One last note is that even after the sub-boards are created, migration will take a long time. To go through each of the existing boards and individually move each of the 260+ tire/wheel threads took a while, so we want to do this once. (Multi-tasking with the TV on or in a hotel room.) The search function will continue to be vital.

The following are the proposed new sub-boards to go under Technical. They loosely follow the divisions of the maintenance manual:

Tires, Wheels, Discs (now done)
(There are already a couple of excellent photo "how to" threads to use as the basis for instructional stickies about how to remove and install.)

Electrical, lights, instruments (ABS, TC, & ignition are in other sub-boards)

Oil, oil changes, oil filters, lubricants, coolant, anti-freeze
(There are already a couple of excellent photo "how to" threads to use as the basis for stickies about changing oil.)

Brakes and ABS (discs go in the Tire/Wheel/Disc sub-board)

Engine, clutch, transmission, shifting, final drive, muffler, air filters, TC, and ignition
(The existing ignition map sub-board would go under this)

Accessories and modifications such as skid plates, crash bars, seats, windshields, enlarged gas tanks, handlebars, levers, etc
There are very few frame, paint, and body threads so maybe they could be included here?
(Will probably need several Cliff's Notes stickies.)

Suspension and handling

We need a dedicated sub board for each of the following which only contain one topic each:

-Sticky Shifter
-Hard Start

:)

I like the idea of the sub boards. As a new user, or a lurker, finding info is difficult with everything jumbled together.

The shifter already has a sticky and "Cliff's Notes" intro post, which will definitely move to the transmission sub-board under the current proposal.
Hard starting should've been a sticky a long time ago. It'll be one under the engine sub-board.

Still looking for input from anybody about whether the proposed sub-boards are what we want to do or if somebody has other suggestions.
The forum is something we all share, so what do YOU all want?

We do have a suggestion from Hoak about using TiddlyWikis, which would need a bit of formatting. AvGeek and I are looking into it. Anybody else with experience at this or who has thoughts?

We now have the sub-boards (also known as child boards) and are starting to move threads into them. Please use the new sub-boards to start new topics, which really helps us in that we don't need to spend the time to move new posts.

When you click on "Forum" beneath your avatar, the child boards are just a list. Be aware that if you simply click on "Technical Discussion" then the sub-boards will instead show as a list. That way they will be a lot easier to read.
