I just use protective clear film from a company called the Tankslapper. They have precut sets for various bikes including a Super Tenere. There are various levels of kits for the S10, from just the tank top up to coverage of the whole bike (fenders, fairings, panniers, etc). Once it's on the bike it's pretty invisible until you get close, and the paint job shows right through the film. It's excellent for preventing those minor scratches you get from zippers, tankbags, etc. They don't use any adhesive; you spray a combination of water and alcohol on the tank, then position the film and squeegee out the water to smooth the film onto the tank.. They peel right off with no damage to the paint and no residue left behind.
Mine's about four years old now and looking pretty rough and I'll probably put a new one on in the spring, but it still does its job.
