Suspension costs.

Hi all! Sent an email off to pro pilot suspension to see what the would recommend for 2 up riding for 2 people almost at 450 together. I have a 14 non-ES. They said they like the touratech extreme for their load capability over the OHLINS. Cost for the touratech and OHLINS front was almost 3k. Cost for the OHLINS kit was 2300. Does that sound right? Thanks in advance.

I also have a 2014 non ES and went with Penske - they match up a spring and valving to your anticipated load and riding style. I think it was just in the neighborhood of $900. Are the Touratechs tweaked for the rider/ style, or are there just two or three "flavors" to choose from?


Obviously I'm not a suspension expert - I just needed to get the bike sprung for my weight and have a shock to match the spring. I'm sure there are some "princess and the pea" types who can discern a .0005" difference between valve openings, but I'm not one of them. The ride is greatly improved, just as I wanted. I don't race or ride at 100%, so paying double or triple for a few % better performance is not on my radar.

Touratech offers several levels of shock. You'll want hydraulic preload. I went up a couple of steps from the basic, but it gets stupid expensive after that. I did spend a bit over $3k. Ohlins 30mm kit on the forks and TT Explore on the back. I was going to just get the TT HP version, wanting the better, more robust and longer travel pre-load adjuster, but after talking to a few shops decided to take the plunge and up that to the Explore shock with hi/low speed adjustment so it would be more able to dial in to my needs. I run heavily loaded, sometimes pushing two up weight with only me, but other times stripped down and light, so wanted as much range as I could get. It's better than my tired stock set up was with 60k plus on the shock and a much stiffer spring than oem for nearly all of those miles. I'd already replaced the first shock at 50k with another low mile stocker that a forum member very generously gave me before my '13 IBR ride.

I think, (being a suspension noob), that the Extreme might be overkill for anyone just doing touring. At the end of the day, it's only ~$300 more for the Extreme than the Explore though, so you are certainly stepping up the costs.

I'm happy with the compliance of the Ohlins front and TT rear set up I have, but honestly need help getting it better dialed in. Or time to spend actually reading the manual that came with this stuff and following the instructions! :D

Yes the touratech is sprung to your weight and riding style. My only concern with the costs is am I putting too much money in a Tenere and would I ever see that money back on a trade? I bought the bike because I got a great deal to test the "adventure bike " waters. Just thinking that if I'm using the bike for 2 up touring, would I be better if it doesn't work out with my wife to sell the bike stock and put the 3k towards a more sport touring bike? Otherwise I really like the bike but the jury is still out on comfort for sport touring with the wife.

I'm planning on going with Penske from StoltecMoto for my upgrades after the Christmas splurge. Fork spring, valves, and rear shock. Reasonably priced compared to other options.

As far as getting a return on investment, keep your low mileage oem parts and reinstall when selling. Or give the purchaser the option to buy. But for those that ride the same bike for a while, suspension parts are considered a consumable.

While aftermarket is definitely better, how much have you already played around with the stock suspension? I was nicely surprised when I spent some time setting the sag and then playing with the other settings.

$3k is far too much and unnecessary for a 2-up touring setup. You especially don't need to spend $2,300 on Ohlins guts for the forks, seriously.

I would call Rick at Cogent Dynamics in NC. Let them know your goal and that you're looking to do this on a reasonable budget, see what he recommends. Rick's work on my Vstrom 1000 several years back yielded one of the the best balanced setups I've ever enjoyed and I spent less than half of what you're considering. And I'm more or less 2-up all the time, at 305 pounds geared up!

Thanks and I will call Rick. I have set up the stock suspension for myself and am very pleased with the result. I'm just concerned with another 160 lbs of rider and 20 or so lbs of gear and farkles.

I have a Cogent set up also. Rick re-valved the forks, with new springs, for about $450 (?), and the rear shock, with a very blingy remote reservoir was about $750 (?) IIRC. It is the best mod I have done on my 2012.

Yep, cogent here as well. I was 320 last year and rode with my 140 pound son on the back for a week. It was perfect.

I too am very strong on Cognent Dynamics. Rick is great! http://www.motocd.com/ I live close by ... 75 miles so I just ride over and get work done. Note... I have NOT had any Tenere' suspension work done but many bikes in the past and just put a shock that they made on my 2015 FJ-09 and now they have the forks off the FJ-09. The shock was a major transformation to the FJ, the fork work will be the icing on the cake! ::008:: ::008::
