Not sure why on earth anyone would think it is a good idea to take a beautiful bike like the Super Tenere and hang a piece of salvage off it that looks like it came from a yard sale or the set of "Sandford and Son." ;D

I thought you would get a "that is so KLR". I don't get it. Pelican cases from either Caribou or Twisted Throttle are very affordable and so much better than ammo cans. A good rack is the most expensive component of any luggage systen.

Well, if you are a skilled metal smith and you get the cans for free...

I agree, though, the Caribou stuff is very nice and those Pelican cases are about indestructible.

Money is an issue for most of us, but it's f'ing pathetic to hang Army surplus ammo cans off this motorcycle. And I'm a former KLR owner!! Get some soft bags, dude!

They will take a beating that no high dollar case will take.
And weigh twice as much doing it!

I appreciate the passion guys. I too think the ammo cans would be a bit ugly, but they would be solid. my top box is a touratech , which will hold my helmet . and I would like to finish with touratech panniers. I just do not have the 1600+ it seems, any time soon. so I have a cheap side, and I thought this might be an option till finances improved. even soft bags cost more than the cans.... I really like my bike, and the farkles I add hopefully compliment the overall looks of this machine. this bike suits me . im even thinking of using happy trails pannier rack since they are symmetrical and add touratech panniers to these next year. so I would have the same size toura tech pannier s on both sides of the bike. this is a great forum , all your ideas and opinions are appreciated....

For grins last week I installed my KLR's Ammo Can Panniers on my Tenere to check out the fit and leg room.
I forgot to take into account that the DZUS fasteners I used needed more shims to hold the Cans on securely to the Yamaha's rack.

And sure enough I hit the first railroad track crossing about a mile from my house and lost one.
I felt it let go and had just enough time to watch it in the moirror bounce down the country road I live on at about 55 mph.

I hit the brakes and circled around to retrieve it. To my amazement the only damage was skinned powder coating and the lid came off. The DZUS fasteners were nowhere to be found though. Dang $30 down the drain!

All in all, I have 6 different sets of panniers built to fit all my bikes. They all fit every bike I have in the stable. I made them that way.

I have everything from Doskocil Extra Large, and Large sizes to a set of 1960 Shoei's that I refurbished and painted to match the white tank.
A pair of custom made aluminum panniers that I don't use often because they are too thin to expect to survive a get off.
And then there is the old soft bags and a Givi Set Monokey set too.

Sure the Ammo Cans are cheap, and like was said, look like Sanford and Son designed them, but they are tough and can carry everything I'll ever want to take with me in complete weather proof comfort. They won't be my everyday boxes for sure.
The Shoei's are pretty, and make great day trip panniers. But when I decide to take a long extended trip I'll probably use them.

Ugly Ammo Cans, yes!
But, I won't worry about bending them ever again.

I'll post up a picture of them tomorrow.

bouncing panniers , 30 dollar ammo can vs. 600 dollar touratech , my wallet would cry itself to sleep for a year.... you would think the m/c mags could do a shoot out on panniers. pick a bike and then mount different panniers and see what survives...

I have a set of soft bags I am currently using since I do not have a rack system for the Happy Trails I robbed off the KLR. Honestly I like using the Soft but they still need a rack system to hold them out.

If you really are in a pinch my money saving rule is 5 dollars a day = 150 dollars a month.

When I first started road touring there was not much for well, anything other than in the back of magazines. I grew up with horses so the solution was simple, I took a set of western Saddlebags, shortened them via rivets to fit on my Virago and off I went. I bet you can pick yourself up a set of western saddlebags for a few dollars from a pawn shop, have a unique look and not look like you are a broke ass.

You can also use a backpack or duffle bag on your rear rack and even your seat.

I think the ammo cans are cool looking

I also think people tend to carry too much crap, so the need for a giant luggage system is beyond me

Not trolling, just defending the ammo can concept.....I would be pretty pissed if I bought some uber expensive panniers made of unobtainium from Touratech and scraped them on turns all the time.

**i also don't camp off the bike, so all I need is clothes and a tire repair kit! maybe rain gear and I'm on the road

Sorry it took so long to get back here with these.
My quick release ammo box panniers!

I removed all but the end latches. hinged the lids to the boxes at the inside for easier access.
Added tie down loops to the lid inside and outside and put LED Brake lights on back.
I added reflective tape to the back of the boxes for visibilitiy.
A Freak Hail Storm knocked the bike of in the Breezeway last Sunday.
The Powerbronze Windscreen was the only damage.
Got a good video of the hail storm but can't post it here.
These baby's are tough!
