For grins last week I installed my KLR's Ammo Can Panniers on my Tenere to check out the fit and leg room.
I forgot to take into account that the DZUS fasteners I used needed more shims to hold the Cans on securely to the Yamaha's rack.
And sure enough I hit the first railroad track crossing about a mile from my house and lost one.
I felt it let go and had just enough time to watch it in the moirror bounce down the country road I live on at about 55 mph.
I hit the brakes and circled around to retrieve it. To my amazement the only damage was skinned powder coating and the lid came off. The DZUS fasteners were nowhere to be found though. Dang $30 down the drain!
All in all, I have 6 different sets of panniers built to fit all my bikes. They all fit every bike I have in the stable. I made them that way.
I have everything from Doskocil Extra Large, and Large sizes to a set of 1960 Shoei's that I refurbished and painted to match the white tank.
A pair of custom made aluminum panniers that I don't use often because they are too thin to expect to survive a get off.
And then there is the old soft bags and a Givi Set Monokey set too.
Sure the Ammo Cans are cheap, and like was said, look like Sanford and Son designed them, but they are tough and can carry everything I'll ever want to take with me in complete weather proof comfort. They won't be my everyday boxes for sure.
The Shoei's are pretty, and make great day trip panniers. But when I decide to take a long extended trip I'll probably use them.
Ugly Ammo Cans, yes!
But, I won't worry about bending them ever again.
I'll post up a picture of them tomorrow.
