Look into pirateship.com. They have reduced rates negotiated with UPS and USPS. I sent a package from Texas to Montana the other day that UPS wanted about $16 booked through them but I went through pirateship.com and it was less than $6. AND then I dropped it off with UPS to carry, no problem. Maybe doesn't work in every instance, but I've shipped through them several times at substantial savings.
