I get what sounds like valvetrain clatter at when you back off the throttle that sort of no load float moment. Thars when it rattles. It bugged me at first I'm learning to ignore it.

Update:

I decided to swap out my oil on the new to me bike. It only had 4500 miles on it and the previous owner said the oil was changed a few hundred miles ago. He didn't say when that was. So I swapped in Valvoline 20w-50 Synthetic and a new filter. Bike is much quieter now. Very little engine clatter.

I use Mobil 1 in both my Harley and 2016 Super Tenere. The clatter noise from my Super Tenere (5500 miles) was troublesome to say the least. I just did not enjoy riding it due to the clattering noise. I had remorse about buying the ST and thought about selling it. Someone had written that is just how the ST motor is, it sounds like a metal toolbox full of nuts and bolts rolling down a set of stairs. LOL I changed the oil a couple of weeks ago to Valvoline 10w-40 full synthetic motorcycle oil and the clatter noise is basically gone. I rode my ST to Fayetteville, Arkansas last week for Bikes, Blues & BBQ and rode 700 miles throughout the Ozarks. I truly enjoyed my ST for the first time since buying it new 3 years ago! It was quiet and the shifting improved. The ST is is a keeper now. I don't know much about oil. It's worth a try is you're having the clattering noise. I bought the Valvoline synthetic motorcycle oil at Walmart for $7 or $8 quart and I bought the Mobil 1 oil filter.

My experience exactly. I also used the motorcycle Valvoline synthetic but 20w-50. Makes it a nicer ride! I have never used car or truck oils in motorcycles.
