Might ride the PA-wilds BDR-X route while I'm over there?
It's a lovely ride. Rode it back in September. It's definitely worthwhile, but understand there's a significant difference from the mapping of regular BDR. Do NOT plan for each section to end at a gas station.

NO JOKE ! We certainly learned this very FAST... We have also learned that 5 gallons might or might not get you to the next station ! Extra gas is a "GOOD" cushion !

I certainly dont know what others might choose to go ride, we are considering Wyoming or Idaho... Im leaning Idaho, because of the trees, Etc. Ride up to Canada... For the first time EVER, we are kicking around the idea of somehow transporting the bikes as far NW as we can get them and then riding the rest of the way. Try and save the "dirt tires" for the BDR and the ride home. Just kicking around ideas and thoughts.

Thank you for this info Gents.
I will definitely plan for fuel if i ride this. I usually carry 1/2-gallon of extra with me anyway just in case.

I could do Idaho too. My S10 is fairly new-to-me so a less challenging route might be better anyway. Adding that I'm getting married end of July so my fiancee would kill me if I went before August.

Ive read info from the BDR site that late August is a good time..... I can assure you that the two BDR's I've already ridden have some very challenging sections. I kind of laugh when I go watch the BDR films of the two BDR's Ive ridden and can see all the hard stuff basically cut out of the film. I then go look at other BDR films and already "know" they are not showing "all" of it... LOL. (hard stuff)

It all can be ridden, but they all have there moments ! LOL. There was a "super fun" sand section in CO last summer.. It was about 10 miles of deep ass sand. River bed deep sand. Totally fun on a 300 cc KTM totally unloaded !!!! Totally NOT fun on a 900+ Lbs fully loaded Super Tenere. And right after the deep sand section, it was another 20++ miles of steep up and down hills. Most had very large rain ruts and really big dips or carve outs at each of the bottoms. That was a pretty tough 50 miles or so.

Another fun day was the section that had about 20 water crossings in one day. Many of them are what I consider "normal", ,about 12"-18" deep and typically long. In this case we ran many of those, but we came a few that were about knee deep (sitting on the bike) and was sketchy as hell. These are not "for fun" splash around while your friends are filming you for You-Tube. You must make it across to continue on the trail. Each BDR has a little bit of everything, it's a total blast !

(For the folks that might read this and just don't know. You need to be 100% self sufficient on the BDR. Camping, food, cooking, prep, extra fuel, all your water, Etc, Etc,Etc.... The bike is a total pack mule, and extra heavy..................Now just add 800-1300 miles of off road out in the boonies and your now on a BDR)

It's an ADVENTURE !

When I rode Idaho in 2021 at the end of July, it was a really bad wildfire season also.
There were sections of the BDR that were "Closed" due to the fires............Many of the work-arounds were also closed.
Be prepared to find alternate routes, or eliminate certain sections in case of weather or wildfires.
Sometimes bypassing a section via a pavement route means hours and hours of extra riding to get where you want to be.
Just keep this in mind.

Well that makes me cringe a bit when I think of the NEBDR. That one looks awful (my opinion) at times. They even caution in the film not to take your expensive bike unless you're prepared to trash it. They mention a number of their bikes that had significant damage. Crap, if they're downplaying that one I can't even imagine how destructive it must be.

Be prepared to find alternate routes, ...
That's an important outlook to have on the PA BDR-X. So many closed roads due to bridge outs that I probably only rode 75% of the published route.

I don't believe I'll have adequate time off to go with you after Romney to head north. Depending on your schedule I MIGHT be able to head out a day before Romney and meet you guys the day before I need to be at Romney. That's a good part of the ride. It includes all the water crossings.

Idaho it is..... should be about 5500'ish miles total
Sounds about right. It was a bit over 6100 miles for me. I wanted to ride parts of it last year on my trip but the weather was too bad. I didn't get to ride LoLo Pass off road but I did ride all of Hwy 12 so that was an acceptable substitute given the weather...I got rained on for 4 of the 5 days I spent in Idaho.
