Sucking the oils out?

So here I sit with a new filter, filter wrench, a gallon of 15W-40 Rotella T... And none of the local Yamaha dealers have the crush washers for the drain plugs! Then I think (dangerous activity)... For 130K miles on my VW diesel I've been using a little suction pump to suck out the oil, and have yet to disturb the drain plug. Wonder if I could suck the oil out the filler neck and leave the plugs and unobtainium crush washers undisturbed?

Just reuse the washer. Just cleen the washer on some emery cloth.

Seems like a lot of work to get the oil out. Remember there's 2 drain plugs because it's a dry sump. The tank holds most of it and a small amount in the crank case.
Have fun :)

No, you can't reach most of it with your pump.

Like Limey said, you can re-use the crush washer.

Or take the crush washer to any AUTO parts store and match it to a new one there. The size is used in cars.

I reuse the washers 10-15 times with a non-hardening aviation gasket goo. Usually available from most auto/parts stores. I use it on all my vehicles for last 30 years. Also stops a poorly torqued plug from coming loose.

Aint saying it's right or proper, But I been reusing crush washers since my first new Yamaha in 1977. Never a problem. Change your oil and don't sweat it.

I do however advise my customers to always replace crush washers and gaskets :)

I usually use the same crush washer in both my auto's (including my Jetta TDI), and bikes until they get in the 30K mile range. Not a problem, never had a leak so far.

The two local Yamaha dealers I checked didn't stock any of the washers, so I assume they're just reusing them too. The oil drain washers were barely roughed up a bit, and look like garden variety copper washers. The final drive washers are as expected like spark plug washers, had plenty of compression space left so I reused them. Yamaha seems a bit confused themselves- They tell you to replace the final drive drain washer every time but the fill washer only when it's worn out- Despite the fact that they recommend the same torque for both! Just finished up the rest of the 400 mile service, after lunch I may look at some DIY farkling ideas before I put the bike back on it's side stand.
