HeliMark: Great trip report. With your aviation background, you might look into a Garmin 665. It displays XM aviation weather (ground level). It has the same 7-10 min delay from actual conditions, but not so critical on a bike. The 665 is a great cross country driving companion. It's helped this So. Calif. fair weather boy, skirt some horrendous thunderstorm cells in the Midwest.

I am looking at the Garmin 665. It has what I want. Especially XM radio. Absolutely love to listen to the old time radio shows while riding. Just that I am cheap, although I do have the money for it. And it would solve several issues. My last GPS was "appropriated" by my youngest daughter several years ago.

Rickvan67, I did the modification that raised and pulled back the bars, and different seat. With just that, I was impressed I was able to ride the miles I did as I have moderate degenerative disc's in both my neck and lower back. Speaks a lot about the bike.

Great report on your ride. I also made the trip, my first to Sturgis. Beautiful area, will be back with the wife during normal times. My buddies just had to go to the Full Throttle Saloon, so I of course had to go along. Interesting to say the least. Saw ZZ Top performing there. It was the Friday before the big week, but things were still on the verge of getting hectic. As we rode into the Full Throttle the parking guys waved us up to the very front of the stage area...... Probably the first time a Super Tenere was right in the front of the stage...... as all other bikes were HD's. had a great time...... First time posting a pic so I hope it uploads.

Yes..... really liking the Tenere. And I still have the BMW. It is such a nice bike I just can't part with it. It is a great compliment to the Tenere. But I sure do wish one of them had cruise control. I may have to go to the '14 or '15 Tenere for just that reason. My biggest adventure yet was a week long motorcycle ride in the beautiful Italian area of Tuscany earlier this month. More than met my expectations.

I just signed on the forum today. I got my '16 Tenere ES a week ago!
A friend is planning a Sturgis trip next year already. We have some cabins rented. We are riding up from southern CA. It will be mostly Harleys, but I don't care.

Sturgis 2015: 13 dead, 152 injury accidents. Definitely not my cup of tea.

Yep!! I have been there in the off season and had a blast. Going to that rally is asking for trouble!!

2018 stats:

8 traffic fatalities

68 injury crashes, 18 more than last year.

46 people were arrested on felony drug charges, down slightly from 2016.

161 people were arrested for drunken driving, 26 fewer than last year.

6 people accused of attempting to have sex with minors. Lots of pedophile's at the rally.

Actually not too bad. It just tells me a lot of people are not getting caught.

Not defending the offenders, but why on earth would you let a minor go to Sturgis when it's "STURGIS".
According to the local news they were minors posing as prostitutes in a sting operation. Still, I was thinking the same thing. As a disclaimer I was just posting these stats from the local Sturgis news feed.

I’ve been to Sturgis 8 times during the event, never had any trouble, yes it’s a crazy place but if your not looking for trouble you most likely won’t have any, security and law enforcement usually very near by. The place is huge crazy high priced motorhome heaven, lots of those motorhomes have the entire family along from little kids to very old grandparents. Some of those motorhomes have 2 floors of garage space in the back with a elevator ! Hard to believe but I bet more motorcycles get hauled to Sturgis than ridden there.

Ha! That's how I'd do it. But I'm a ('). I have a buddy, with a H-D, that has gone to Sturgis for ever. Rides up each year; pulls a little trailer. He loves to take the engine apart and rebuild it. The bike has over 250,000 miles. I'm sure they're out there, but I have never known anybody with that many miles on a H-D.

I have a friend that is 80 years old and still riding his Harley he calls Old Red , I believe it has over 540,000 miles now, he is a very good mechanic and story teller ! Old Red still has the original engine but he has rebuilt it a couple times. And that’s not his only bike I think he has three Harley’s in his garage, in the winter he rides the one with the sidecar.

Him and some friends usually ride to Doc’s Harley Davidson on Wednesday for the meatloaf dinner. Last Wednesday I was there as well and while we were eating this lady walks by and one of the old timers asked her how the ride went, turns out the ride was something like 3,400 miles and it was the Cannonball ! Her and her dad both entered on different bikes, they were rider numbers 52 and 53 . Dad rode a 1916 Harley and Daughter rode a 1922 Harley.

I've been to the Black Hills Motorcycle Rally many times. The choice was to ride in peak summer heat over a 1000 miles on the Super Slab Interstate 90, or roll the bike into a trailer. I always trailed my bike.

Actually there was another blue one, same year as mine parked farther down the same lineup.
I saw a few other Tenere's in and around Sturgis the day that I was there, so some of Y'all were there too!

I have been to sturgis 3 times on my bike. We only wonder around down town and visit the vendors and do some demo rides. We get out of there by 5pm. It is actually very nice. Not what i expected. It is crowded but we have never had trouble getting in or out of town. Gatlinburg TN is 100 times worse to drive in. The best part no one has ever gave me a dirty look or said anything bad about my yamaha. Around here in ky i get dillweeds remarking on the looks of my bike or the brand and im pretty sure their bike has never been more than 30 miles from home. In any case during the day down town it has a very welcoming feeling and people let people be. It is crowded though!

And yes, from what I experienced everyone seemed welcoming and acted mostly responsibly. We didn't stick around for the nighttime shenanigans though..............
