Adding to this old thread: today one of my OEM case cores fell out. As discussed above, tiny torx screws got undone and the front part (the one you stick the key into) of the core fell out. That said, the plastic cover did keep the rear part in place and I was able to easily open and remove the case by using a pair of manicure (wife's) scissors - insert the scissors into two holes left vacant by torx screws, twist and... presto!
As included in the instructions... "Use the included Blue Loctite".

Also, always push down on the lid when locking or unlocking the side case.

Call anyone help relieve my frustration, I'm installing the locks currently and can't track down the posts everyone is talking about with helping to install...really looking to toss these instructions across the room, I've installed this thing three times and it still won't turn to unlock....
Also.. Idiot Self (that's me) closed a lid without the screw holding it open and can't get it back open... obviously I'm new to this, haha. Any suggestions?

If your trying to lock the lid as it sits in your picture it won’t. You need to push in the red lockdowns front and rear(like you were locking the entire case to the bike) then you can lock / unlock the lid.

With a properly working lock, you have to push down on the lid, while turning the key. (at the end by the lock) I have no idea how to get one open with a lock installed improperly though. But, I'm sure somebody will chime in on how to though.

I got the unbuilt box opened by shoving my finger inside(hard) and turning, luckily it opened, I'll try to attach the boxes to bike and use the locks then and see if the locks will work, doesn't seem I can get to turn at all

Okay, this is my second time down this road. Last time it happened, I locktited and lubed everything. Somehow the blue locktite on the right side case didn't hold the lock together. So last night I tried to remove the key from the lock and the entire core came out. No matter what Dallara says, these locks are the cheapest shit I've ever encountered ::010:: I have never had a lock core come out of any other lock in 53 years of turning keys. Never. Sometimes a lock will corrode and get stiff but the core doesn't fall out rendering the thing un-useable.

I have read thru the thousands of ... wait... make that MILLIONS of posts here about how fiddly and finicky the locks are. Then some fanboy jumps in and says it must be user error. There should be NO fiddling... it's a f*cking LOCK for chrissakes. We love the bike so we defend something that's indefensible!

Going to the garage with a bourbon and a hammer to try and get into the very expensive, useless side case...

RANT OVER.
I share your frustration. Yamaha builds great bikes, but it ends there, because the shitty bags or panniers are made cheapo by another manufacturer.
One of my panniers arrived damaged prior to being placed onto the bike. Dealer replacement..
When I arrived home on delivery day the first thing I did was to remove these crappy bags or boxes and store them in the basement.
I use soft bags and they function very well for me.
Yamaha has to either make their junk bags optional or provide better quality panniers to match the quality of the bike.

I hear ya man. I had one come out and I had another on the verge... Even undoing and lock-tite'ing them in, its part of my "monthy". check.... They are total crap. They are so crappy I'm afraid I'll bend or break my key in it, that i've bought a spare key that I use strictly on the boxes... so if it breaks, I still have a key for the ignition...

I think I read in a thread that you can open it by basically taking it apart from the bottom of the box... Never had to do that.... so far... (knock on wood)
Oh ya don't use the ignition key in these shitty bags or ya'll ain't goin nowhere

Expflier, I did as you recommended and still nothing, I even put them on the bike and they still won't turn at all

Is this a brand new bike that the three locks came with it or is it possible that you have the wrong key? Turning the key counterclockwise after pushing in the red lockdowns is how it attach/detach to the bike and it must be locked down before you can open or close the lid by turning the key clockwise. You can’t even pull the key out unless it is in the attached position. I would take the case off and make sure the locking device operated by the two red handles is functioning properly . Then I’d pull out the locks and make sure they are working. Sounds like you may have a problem with the linkage. I’ve never had an issue with mine after four years and 46k miles.

In the US bags are optional for the Super Tenere. Dealers sometimes add them to the bike, but bike's don't come with them. Yamaha Canada likes to do things differently. Some things better, some things worse.

The bags aren't that bad, but they do require some specific care and use methods. Not being aware of this can result in frustration and broken parts. Regardless, the OEM plastic boxes don't usually survive impact well. The FJR side cases at least would take a good impact and stay together most of the time. Completely different design.

I picked up my used ‘13 S10 that came equipped with the optional OEM Yamaha/Shad side cases last June and I have since put over 2K miles on the bike using the side cases every time and I have had absolutely no problems with any aspect of their design or function.
The only attention that was required on my part was as it was pointed out to me from a S10 owner/forum member over on ADV Rider was a proactive move to make sure and put blue loctite on the screws that secure the keyed lock cylinder to the case as these screws have a propensity to vibrate loose thus causing the cylinders to fall into the locked side case which would then cause a Charlie-Foxtrot to get the case open and to reinstall the cylinder to its rightful location.
With me making this statement I have now probably jinxed myself regarding my side cases.

Brand new, just got the locks in the mail beginning of last week. Whilst on the bike, I can get the left box to pop the red buttons but it's not the right direction nor the full distance (pretty much as soon as I attempted to turn the key)

Does the key turn the lock cylinder when it's removed from the case? It's beginning to sound like the locks aren't matched correctly to your key. I have the OEM cases now for 4 years and 60,000 miles, used almost daily. Though I'm not impressed with the quality and crude feel of the lock mechanisms, they have held up fine so far.

Another thought is when I assembled them into the cases, I found screwing the little retaining screws in too tightly tended to cause binding of the mechanism.

I'm beginning to think the same with matched because my ignition key doesn't do anything like it's not matched and the box keys don't start it either, I figured they just meant to do that after all.
I've used a small torque wrench and did the 7N, thinking the same thing. Thanks for the suggestion, I just jerryed them onto the bike and taking to them to dealer tomorrow, I'm at wits end. Thanks for the suggestions, we will soon see what has been the cause of my clenched jaw and increased alcohol consumption of late.

Turns out...wrong keys, thought the locks were stiff but not that stiff haha. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Live and Learn. I'll be posting soon concerning a luggage rack fabrication, if anyone has any input or hints please feel free to message me, I'm new to ADV riding but loving the community and the freedom it gives. Can't wait to ride more and more. Thanks again!
