Hi Guys! I need a little help/advice, over the winter I performed a major maintenance on her, valve adj ,clutch etc…. Everything went well and bike runs like a champ, I quadruple checked the correct timing during assembly so im not hanging my hat on that, it’s only during staring without throttle the bike will stumble and eventually start, if I give it minimum throttle, she starts like brand new. Any ideas? Thanks!

No throttle=runs like crap. Partial throttle=runs great. Not going to be the motor, or it would run crappy all the time. The common denominator is the throttle.

No throttle when starting stumbles but will start, minimum throttle, starts perfect, had the rpm “run away” after starting couple times to 3k and go back to normal?…. My gut tells me , sensor, bad connection or just weak battery creating havoc in the ecu….

I suggest checking your battery. in my case that was the first clue I had the battery was getting wussie. Mine is very unforgiving when it comes to the battery. It has happened twice now and both times to problem was gone

Yamaha 1200 Tenere is definitely pretty well known for hard start issues, there is a thread on this forum about hard start and it’s over 50 pages long .

IIRC, you have a Gen1, so can interrogate the dash for codes - always the best place to start.

My first reaction is the TPS, or the throttle bodies need balancing, indeed the cap on the port can become perished with age & introduce an induction air leak.

If your throttle bodies are too far out of sync it’ll show up worse at closed throttle as the TB that’s opened more tries to drag the lagging cylinder. Once the you pull the throttles a bit open, the out of balance sync becomes less noticeable since both cylinders are getting adequate air then.
