DM first got us going with intercoms. I was against it, she was right. Once on board we've owned a lot of Sena headsets over the last 15 years. We always buy them as dual packs, two SMH-10s, three S20s, and five 50S units. No one can accuse us of not giving them a chance. We did. They are in our past now.

What killed it was the 50S. I really appreciated it was the first Sena unit that had adequate volume for me, a rider who uses ear plugs. It was a great until it quickly became apparent the charge would not last beyond 3 hours of use.

Sena Customer Service was excellent about saying they would replace it. I didn't like they wanted me to send the unit, wait until they had it, then they would mail another. After some minor prompting they agreed to send the replacement first.

The replacement worked for almost a year. It died on the first day of the trip heading to the South Dakota Tenere gathering. It rained hard that day. The unit worked all day, then never turned on again. Due to a previous helmet theft, my DM and I learned to travel with a back up intercom, so I used an old S20 unit for the remained of that trip.

Again, Sena Customer Service was good. They did tell me I should never use the unit in hard rain and it should only be used on light rain days. Really...? You sell a product for motorcyclist that can't be used in a common motorcycling environment?...huh. But they agreed to replace it.

The second replacement worked for 12 months before starting to malfunction. Fully charged unit not turning on, only turning on if you put USB power to it then trying to turn on, going to charge it and seeing the blue charge light was already on...even when unit is not plugged in, turning on once in the morning, turn off, it will not turn on again. Just flat out dead, or at best unpredictable. It was completely dead on the last day of my BDR-X PA Wilds trip.

This time Sena Customer Service did note the unit was 3 months beyond the warranty period of the original purchase. They have no repair service and could not replace it due to the expired warranty. I was not surprised. They did offer to generate a discount code for me for a new unit.

I thanked them for the discount offer, but pointed out based on my experience with the last 3 units, I did not believe it would be wise for me to put money into a 4th unit. I'll be moving on, thank you.

To be completely fair, my DM's 50S unit has never had a failure in the 27 months we've had it. Of course, she rides much less than me and will sometimes take 9 months off from riding at a time. Her 50S has far fewer hours on it than any of the three I had fail on me.

We never experienced failures with the earlier models. The idea the 50S is recommended to not be used in the rain is mind-blowing to me. I'm pretty good at keeping my rubber boot over the charge port closed, so I don't suspect it was moisture from there.

So am I just unlucky?...maybe. Three times unlucky?...maybe. Regardless, I'm taking a break from Sena.

I purchased a dual pack of Cardo Packtalk Edge. Right on the box "waterproof." There are a number of other features that I'm looking forward to trying. Not losing comms with DM when the GPS starts to talk, tool free install, natural voice commands, and of course, that magnet attachment is so appealing compared to trying to get the perfect alignment sitting on the side of the road while wearing gloves.

Time will tell if Cardo is as good and reliable as I hope. I know Sena hasn't been.

I have had a pair of s20s since 2018. They are still working fine. My group likes sena they pair a lot easier then the older Cardos. Been thinking about Cardo. 2 things slow my roll. 1. My Sena work fine. 2. Will be the black sheep with a different brand. Everyone has various years and models of Sena. It all seems to work. I would be like the guy on the credit card commercial gumming up the works paying cash.

That is definitely a sticky feature of Sena.

I had to pair my 50S with a Cardo earlier this year. It seemed nearly impossible until we watched a video. After that it took about 15 seconds and fewer steps than we realized.

I figure it will be on me to understand how to make pairing easy when planning a group ride.

My Sena 20s EVO is 5 years old and works fine.
But I’m not very impressed with any of the various wireless headsets on the market, pairing different brands should be very easy but it’s not, batteries should be very easy to replace but it usually isn’t, I’m sure things will very slowly continue to improve but the way things are today is a bunch of crap !

I had Sena 10‘s (4 units, for my wife, myself and 2 daughters), they were replaced once under warranty and then the replacements failed 14 months later, so I upgraded all 4 units to Sena 20s. These worked for 2 years and then failed, customer support was useless just pointing they were out of warranty. So I then bought Sena 20s Evo units, these worked for 2 years and then Failed, again, no help from Sena. So at considerable expense (we all have 2 helmets, for riding dirt or road, so we have 4 intercom units and 4 extra helmet fitting kits) I changed everything to Cardo pactalk. As you state, the box marks that they are waterproof and they come with a 3 year warrant, for me that speaks volumes about how Cardo stands behind their products! I don‘t feel the units are as nicely made as the Sena, the helmet attachment is much more solid on the Sena and the volume wheel is easier to use on the Sena, but the pactalk have better sound quality, are louder so I can hear them at speed, the noise canceling actually works (when we had 4 sena’s in group mode there was always wind noise, but 4 of us on pactalks and the wind noise stop as soon as we stop talking, it doesn’t mute the music every few seconds). Exceedingly happy with the pactalks, time will tell if they are more reliable than the sena’s, but CARDO seem to stand behind their products and technically they seem superior to Sena.

I've had my Sena 20s for 5 1/2 years. We have a total of 4; mine, wife, and 2 sons. I've had a boom mic go out, but other than that, no issues. That being said, I use mine daily but only to listen to music. When the occasion presents to pair it with one of the others, they pair quickly and automatically. But none of us have used them in the rain. On the few times that I've got caught in the rain, I've removed the head unit and put it in my go bag due to reading about the rain failures of others. I don't recharge until I get down to 2 flashes on start up, and that will last me about three weeks at an hour or so a day.

It has taken us 15 years to figure out how to get our various Garmin models to tack the 1 route the same. This is what we figured out.

1. Don’t email gpx files back and forth. I now use Google My Maps. Makes edits and group efforts a snap.
2. The routes get loaded from one laptop the day of the trip.
3. I physically take their gps from them and turn off all avoidances and set to fastest time and finally turn off auto recalculate

This system works. In fact it is flawless
The same map on device and laptop helps.

I will make the move from Sena to Cardo next year.

I've been using Sena for the last 4 years/+100.000km and have never been really happy with it. Connectivity issues, intricate user interface and short battery life.

I realize my post was off subject probably why it was deleted (nothing controversial). The point I was trying to make is that when poorly thought out at times incompatible technology is thrown in the mix with our aging group it can take years to sort out, provided you don’t give up. Be it Sena, garmin or something else.

I have had the Cardo Pactalk for a little over two years now, mainly used for listening to music. It was a little tedious on the initial syncing of the XM bluetooth dongle I use, and my phone, but once paired, always works. I have ridden in rain, and a number of gully washers without any problems.

You've been pretty fed up with Sena for at least the last year and damn straight that it'll be on you, because I've never been successful in pairing with a Cardo device.

You are a mightmare case for the intercom makers. They oughta pay YOU to be their torture test rider.
LOL

ya'all make it sound like I am Kenny Roberts
You know you're just a special case.
