Universal Joint Protector

Hello!

I have been reading on this forum about people getting their pant leg caught on the UJP and had a question re my 2015 ST. The joint protector on the 2015 is sloped in a bit at the top which seems to prevent such a calamity from happening. Is this a design modification by Yamaha in response to these incidents or are UJPs on older models also shaped that way?

Thank you for your feedback!

Chris

Re: Universal Joint Protector

Haven't seen the one on the 2015, but this pretty much alleviates the issue.
(perhaps a bit of overkill, but built for RTW ruggedness)

Unfinished, in this pic.

The one on my 2013 was vertical. I read the report about someone getting his pants caught and breaking his ankle. That was enough for me to replace it with an Altrider guard.

Based on the pictures I've viewed of the 2015, the protector looks the same as my 2014.

Just fitted the Touratwat one, smaller and you don`t need to bolt to the subframe, OK if you don`t mind waiting 2.5 weeks for delivery :(

Re: Universal Joint Protector

If you are just worried about getting pants leg caught, you can fix the problem for about a dime and it sure is lighter than the alternate plates. Simply put a small hole in the existing plate and run a tie-wrap between that and the sub-frame.

Re: Universal Joint Protector

I installed the Altrider part. Then while riding the other day, I damn near fell over at a stop light when my boot lace caught on the shift lever. ??? I usually tuck the laces up under the velcro strap (which is likely its main purpose) but apparently a I did a poor job of it. You can fix stupid.

They are both functional, it depends on whether you like the carbon look or the stainless look, and the availability/price in your country. This is what the Touratech ones look like fitted:

Was the guy who got his pant legs caught wearing bell bottoms?

As for myself, I wear riding pants anyhow s not remotely worried about it. The touratech one does not look like it does much IMO.

+1 and the Altrider is a great fit-just be Sure to specify the year-there IS a difference in the top bolt position.

Re: Universal Joint Protector

When you guys refer to pants (meaning trousers) are you talking about ordinary denim jeans? As I always wear either leathers, that are inside my boots, or textile bike trousers, which have a velcro tab to hold them in tight around my boots, it's not possible for me to catch my trouser leg on the plate.

Re: Universal Joint Protector

I think that's the case. Like you I *almost* always wear suitable 'pants', but I figured I might just jump on it in jeans, or more likely, my son might borrow the bike wearing just jeans, which, along with the originals being scuffed, meant I decided to buy replacement heel plates that I can always sell for a chunk of what I paid for them when I come to sell the bike. A small investment in peace of mind.
