So, hey there everyone...

A buddy turned me on to ADV riding and after careful research... I ended up with a new (to me) Tenere. So, I thought I'd go ahead and post up an intro. Kinda long, but at least it has pics!

Been riding motorcycles since I was 6 and I've been a wingnut (Goldwings) since I was 17 when I used to ride my dad's GL1100 to school. Not many kids rode a custom gold-painted bike, fully chromed with 54 lights and a stereo system on it to school... but, I did. Well, I did up until I flipped it on it's side and slid it into an intersection due the leaving the kickstand down as I left the gas-station, thus effectively destroying my Dad's pride and joy.

(Yes, that's me at the ripe old age of 14, about to take a trip with Dad to Branson).

My dad typically took a very "active" roll in my punishments when I did something wrong, so on this day, I felt my life was over. However, when I called him up to tell him what happened, his only words to me were: "Are you OK son? Good, that's all that matters.".

Those words hurt more than the belt... as I wasn't expecting that sort of kindness. Adding insult to injury, he never got another bike after that.

I carried that guilt inside of me for 18 years, when I finally bought him a really nice 1985 GL1200 Limited (appropriately chromed and lighted). I had always remembered him saying how much he liked them when I was growing up... and when he retired, I couldn't think of a better gift than that.

18 years of guilt washed away when I rode up to his house on the Limited and tossed him the keys. He had a huge smile on his face as he started it up then whipped around the block several times. It was the first time he had ridden a motorcycle since I had destroyed his bike 18 years prior.

In college I had a GL500 SilverWing that got me through those years, and I experienced my first "IronButt" on her when I drove her non-stop from Lubbock, TX to Grand Rapids, Michigan to see my folks for Spring Break. Lots of memories on that bike... I even taught my girlfriend (now my wife) how to ride on that bike. After college I traded it in on a new 1991 Jeep Cherokee that I still own today.

I rode mostly dirt bikes from then on up until several years ago when I found a great deal on a 1988 GL1500, with 140,000 miles, in Florida. I bought it sight unseen and my Dad (who was wintering in Florida) picked it up and rode it to DFW for me. I had since put many more thousands of miles on her, and affectionately named her the "Gray Ghost".

My dad's ride from Florida to Texas renewed an interest in him to do some more riding. As a result, him and I started coordinating a yearly family ride in Gatlinburg. Uncles, Aunt's, Cousins, Brother's, Sisters, and great friends from all compass points meet up in Gatlinburg each year in the fall for an awesome time on two wheels. We just had our 10th year of our Gatlinburg Family and Friends ride last October. Here's a pic from our 2nd ride in 2009:

Despite the rocky times my dad and I had while I was growing up (typical teenage rebellion), I'm now incredibly blessed to have him as a best friend and a great riding partner.

Unfortunately... or "fortunately" depending on your point of view... a really good friend of mine let me ride his 2008 GL1800 one year in Gatlinburg... and that was all she wrote. I was very content with my old Gray Ghost up until that moment. The kicker was the wife talking to me on the headset saying... "Ya know... we can afford an 1800 if you want one."

Fast forward to about a month and a half later when I found another craigslist deal in Florida on an '06 Titanium. I flew out there and rode 17 hours straight back to DFW on her.

I've since sold that one and bought a 2014, affectionately named "Ol' Blue":

I've also ridden for years on Dirt before I started touring, in fact I still own my 2000 YZF426 and just recently gave her a make-over:

OK... the other type of riding I've done for the past several years is Track Riding/Racing. I'm also a member of the CMRA and here's my stead:

Finally, here's my stable as of last spring:

Now... why am I here? Well... if you can remember back to the beginning of this post... I recently bought a new (to me) Tenere. I'm starting a new adventure in riding that I hope will bring a lot of new experiences while meeting lots of interesting folks like yourselves along the way. ;)

Soooo... I like to ride. But, being a man of a "certain age" with 3 young girls at home, it doesn't happen as often as I'd like. But... I'm hoping that will change for the better once I start down the ADV path and put my Tenere through it's paces. ;)

Thanks for humoring me everyone.

Ride safe!

Bob

Nice stable of bikes there, Bob and welcome. ADV bikes are the natural progression but be careful... this rabbit hole is deep and expensive. Have fun!

Welcome Bob!
I think our paths may have crossed a few times in my former Goldwing days.
I no longer ride an ST, but have great respect for this fantastic bike. Now riding a honda AT DCT.
This is a great forum with a lot of fine folks, that is why I still lurk around here.

welcome to the madness, Like you I raced for many years until a serious crash ended my career (broke both legs, pelvis, back in 4 places, collarbone and both arms!!) fortunately I wasn't paralyzed so I started riding race reps (R1, CBR900RR, etc) until about 15 years ago my daughters forced me to buy a goldwing (they refused to ride on the race reps as they where worried they might fall of the back). I had that 2004 goldwing for 10+ years before eventually selling it in 2017 for a new tenere ES.. My wife also rides and has an FZ07, we also ride a lot of dirt and dual sport which I love. Most years we go on a long dirt bike holiday with my youngest daughter (18), we have ridden the TAT, CDR, WABDR, COBDR and many other long trails.. I am based in McKinney, so not far from you, you should try getting to the monthly TWT group meeting and meet a few of us in person. This month it occurs on Wednesday...November 7th...at El Fenix in Grapevine...7PM.

All the best Gary

Thanks! I definitely fear the rabbit hole... I'm in pretty deep right now. Throw me a line!! ;)

Thanks Bill... and that's quite possible. I've been on the GL1800 forums for @ 10 years now.
Thanks!
congrats on your new ride, STFlyer, with a simple hello.....
Well... hello... ;)
Welcome from Lucas!
More Texas riders! Thanks!
Welcome from Minnesnowta, white bikes rule
Yes they do... what kind of snow tires do you have on your bikes? ;)

Gary... Thanks for the welcome, and wow... lots of similarities!
I am a member of TWT (GLFlyer) and saw the post regarding the meetup in Grapevine. My belly is already getting bigger than I want, so I usually prefer a ride associated with the meals. At least... that makes me feel like I've worked a little bit for it. ;)
Seriously though... I'll keep an eye on those meetups.
I hope you’re enjoying you’re tenere, it’s a fantastic bike! PS I love your garage setup
Thanks! Loving the number of DFW guys here! :) That's my new garage... I live in suburbia, but got the wife to agree to allowing me to build a garage that is just for my bikes & tools. No kids bicycles, scooters, toys, etc. Besides... now she can actually pull into her own garage now. :)

Bob, Greetings from NY. Cool introduction with great pics!
Long time rider here as well but I think I may have a few years on you.
Picked up a new to me '13 S10 last June and put around 1200 miles on the clock so far.
Unfortunately the temps are now dropping and Winter weather is on the way so my
rides will now be few and far between for the next three months.
Hope you enjoy your S10 as much as I do!

Thanks for the welcome and nice bike you got there! . I actually like the look of the black panniers better than my silver ones.

I've already put a few hundred miles on her and planning a Thanksgiving weekend ADV ride to shake her down a bit. Just bought a Hennessy Hammock that I'm dying to try out.

The difference between us is... In Texas... we are in prime riding season right now!

I'm good riding into the upper 30's as long as I get some good trail riding in the 50's & 60's. We do fluctuate a lot on temps down here, so it can be hard to plan in advance for a late fall trip.

Summer riding down here can be torturous... especially with temps in the 100's. So, my favorite time is spring and fall... and if we're lucky, we get a few good winter riding days as well.

I just did my first real ride on her last week. We rode from Venus to Maypearl Texas. Google it... It's about 10 miles from point to point. But... We took the "Long Way Around", and did it in about 120 miles down backroads, dirt roads and trails. That was a blast and I finally got her "dirty"! I think she likes it when I ride her dirty.

Anyway... Looking forward to more adventures on the Tenere!

HI and welcome. Unfortunately I don't see us meeting up, unless Touratech does a pair of bolt-on wings and a propeller.

Thanks! Yeah... they haven't made a Tenere that can cross the pond just yet. ;)
