Right this bike has just done a 3500-mile trip to The Italian Dolomites from UK with no problems, and I have owned it for 7 years, the only trouble I ever get is starting, I left the bike after the trip for 3 weeks, wont start,I know its well documented about starting problems, is there a permanent cure?If ypou cant leave a bike for 3 weeks and it wont start ,its a problem got a 19 year old Aprilia ,never get this problem, got a decent battery ,good charging system ,only think its down to crap fuel,on my trip I used E10 with no problem and now and again a tank of premium,It seems if you get a tiny voltage drop these bikes wont start and flood,Thoughts?

Had something vaguely similar recently , although mine was the morning I was leaving for the ferry.
In the end cranked it over with the throttle wide open and it spluttered into life.

Make sure that y'all are letting it do its little pre-start-up before hitting that button. Pushing the start button in the middle of that can, and frequently will, cause a no start, or a start-and-die. I learned the hard way.

I have had the bike flood and foul plugs twice now, only after being stood for a bit, Premium Fuel only and new battery more often, gone off Yuasa too, got 4 bikes and I have used them for years, dont seem to last the same .

That's all we have, for the most part, over here. There's the odd place that carries ethanol free gas, but you have to find them.

That sucks. It is becoming more “normal” here too. But it is killing for many engines. I see big problems with engines that are older (development-wise, like the S10), oldtimers and bikes/cars that are being used very little.
Many customers come to my shop for fixing that. That is the only upside, I get a good income out of it ;)

Here in Wisconsin premium fuel is usually 91-93 octane and it has no ethanol and it costs about an extra 50- 75 cents per gallon. Premium is what I usually use in the Tenere unless it’s not available. When I do use regular 87 octane with ethanol I haven’t been able to notice any significant difference in how the Tenere runs.
My previous 2013 Tenere had the no start issue twice, fortunately both times it happened was at home in my garage.
My 2018 has never experienced the no start issue but for the last couple of years I’ve been carrying a jump pack battery just in case it does happen someday in the middle of nowhere. Many folks install a larger amp battery and report significant improvements, I believe the real problem is Yamaha should have used a more powerful starter.
My Goldwing currently has 590,000 miles and has NEVER experienced a no start issue, it cranks and starts much easier than any Tenere I’ve ever seen and it uses regular 87 octane gasoline.

Fair play 590,000 on any machine is amazing,I agree on a bigger starter and a Battery with a Larger CCA should be standard to swing the thing over.

I run Walmart regular ethanol. I’ve tried nonetanol and premium. Never noticed any difference. I’ve got an old 5.4l f250 that will fire right up with e110 that’s been in it for years. I filled it and added Stabil. I just drained the 2 year old gase out of an old 2004 bike in my shed. I put it in my lawn mower and it ran normal.

Yeah, my neighbor has a 'Wing, and his starter spins fast as hell. Every time he hears mine crank, he tells me my battery is going bad. One of these days he'll be right.

And that my friend, is what I believe is the key. All of my small engines get this treatment. I use Shell Premium in the Tenere all of the time, and my Jeep in the summer. The Jeep is parked most of June-September, and so far, I haven't had any issued. I know that Shell advertises that it cleans the engine back to new. I was driving a low mileage 5.7 hemi. When I started it was getting 14mpg and ran well. After about 6 months, the mileage was almost 18mpg, and it ran like a scalded ass ape. And Planet Fitness has a deal that I get 5 cents per gallon discount on any level fuel.

I'm on my third Tenere and have never used anything but either 5% or 10% ethanol and have never experienced a hard start. Saying that the ST has never sat for longer than a week.

I got a few bikes so they sit for sometimes 2 to 3 weeks, thats the problem I think, surely a bike should have the starting capacity to fire up after that, battery voltage drop and crap E10 is the culprip I think.

Fitting a high cranking amp (337) lithium battery has provided quick starts for me, even after the bike sat for 3 months while I recovered from knee replacement.

I think Yamaha has the starter cranking RPM deliberately set quite low as part of the compression release starting system. Higher RPM, once the engine has started, retracts the exhaust valve decompression mechanism.

Without the decompression system I figure Yamaha would have fit a larger, heavier starter and battery.

Just out of interest what is the Lithium Battery you would say is a good choice for our bike. Mine is left for long periods and even though its been on a tender all the time ( i put a 14amp Yuasa in it ) not long ago it doesn't crank as well as it did when I first put it in.

I suppose other Lithium batteries may work just as well, but the one I bought is a Scorpion:

It’s been going strong for 3 years so far.
