Nearly two years in and I’m debating upgrading to a 14s battery. We trailered it to Wales for Easter and it felt like it only just managed to start a couple of times. Never been too happy with its inability to restart if stalled. Caused me to drop the bike last summer, which is a first in over 25yrs riding!!
looking at the quoted figures theres not many 14’s that shows a CCA figure higher than the existing 12s.
OE Yuasa 12s 210A, Yuasa 14s 230A, Motobatt 14s 190A. I’ve had a few Motobatts over the years, but can’t quite see how it would be any better than the existing battery, other than being 3-4 years newer(my bike was pre registered so is actually a good year or so older than my ownership even though I bought it new)
The Yuasa is £100, the Motobatt £64, but I could also choose a Varta or Bosch, both offering 230A like the Yuasa for £65 and £68. Quite tempted with the Bosch, it’s what I tend to choose for my cars. I’ve had Yuasa’s before and not had anything like the life the extra price should suggest.

update, looks like both the Bosch and Varta aren’t suitable for mounting at an angle like on the Tenere. Have found the Yuasa for £83, so looking most likely now.
One more option Exide Lithium ELTZ14S 290A, at £120 (would need a new optimate for one of these though)

So the battery I have is probably a year old. I always have it plugged into the trickle charger when not in use.

Last night I was out on an overnight trip, and we had freezing temps overnight. The bike would not start in the morning. It would crank, but the display would go blank while cranking, which I guess means there wasn't enough juice going to the ECU. I took the battery out and went to like 4 different stores but none had this battery in stock. The Autozone battery tester reported a bad battery with 64CCA only. I did not know YTZ14S work also work, so I bought a jumper cable as a last resort.

After jumping the battery, I rode it for about an hour and had to stop to fill up. After stopping the engine, it cranked up instantly.

When I got home and plugged it into my trickle charger, the green light on the charger came on in about 30 seconds. But perhaps it still does not have enough CCAs for cold weather?

Anyways, since its always been a sluggish crank, even when I had the battery new, I'd like to try a lithium one now with higher CCA.
This is a high compression engine and if a battery is cranking slow it is drawing more current which weakens or kills starters. On cold days a weak battery is worse. Ha e your battery fully charged then go to an auto parts store or a dealer and have it load tested. That will tell you. Or hook up a digital multimeter which captures the lowest voltage. If in the low 10's it is weak and in the 9's done for and you are playing Russian Roulette.
Last fall on a trip a KTM was cranking at our hotel but wouldn't start on a 34°F morning. Walked down there with a lithium jump pack and got him going. I had to use it on the Super 10 once... cranked but wouldn't start. Those jump packs will save you a lot of hassle.
I bought a LiFePo Scorpion Stinger battery from Batterystuff.com and no more problems. But I still carry my

Just had a look into these. Feedback on Amazon not brilliant, a few too many had these die within weeks and no return as Amazon consider them a consumable apparently!! And as with the Exide I’d also have to buy a suitable charger too.
