spare stock rims

Hi everyone, I am loving my new tenere and ride a lot with my wife on the road, so the stock tyres are great, but I love off-road riding and would like to do some serious Dual sport riding (I have a road legal CRF450X for really serious off-road) but not with the stock tyres. I don't want to really keep changing the tyres and rebalancing the wheels each time, so I am thinking to try and find a set of stock wheels from a breakers. I could put some more off-road orientated tyres and balance those wheels and then when I want to go off-road just swap the wheels, and when i get home swap the original wheels back on. As a plan it sounds great, but when I look for wheels, they seem to be $700+ each which seems to be very expensive to me (I have lots of scottish blood, so short arms and deep pockets!!) and I was wondering if anyone has found a solution. I just looked on eBay and did a WEB search, but am hoping that maybe there are some breakers out there with totaled Tenere's that might be selling the wheels for something more in my price range (about $200-300 for the pair!)? maybe I am just dreaming, so just wanted to ask for your inputs, I was also wondering about maybe increasing the front to a 21" but that would then mean removing the mudguard and playing with the brake lines and will screw up the speedo and ABS (possibly the traction control also, but I plan to turn that off when off-roading!! I turn it off most of the time even when on roads!!).

So any suggestions or ideas..

Give a call to Woody's Wheel Workers in Denver, he may have some he had a rear for my Tenere as he does the custom 18"/21" conversion.
$200 to $300 for a set with spokes, Hubs and discs? Sorry but that's not gonna happen. Expect to pay premium dollar used from anyone, like Hens Teeth. ::024::

I have a stock rear wheel, with maybe about 8000 miles on it I will be letting go of as soon as I remove the bald tire that is on it.

I think i was mainly referring to any OEM rims Woody would have sitting around the shop from bikes that had the conversion done.
The whole Woody's wheel conversion is completely from the ground up project, front hub ABS connection longer break lines. Even the holes for the spoke nipples are custom drilled for both rims.
As you may remember the trouble the rear 18" wheel with the Everlasting Gobstopper full knobby gave me to the point Woody just slapped on the OEM rim he had at his shop.
God i loved that 21/18 but the rear rubbed into my swing arm crotch and cracking spoke nipple bases thus ended a match made in heaven. :'(
Yeah if you can piece things together for your needs do it, but will still end up being expensive in the end. Just keep looking, click on newly listed Tenere wheel on ebay and book mark it check it from time to time. You may get lucky. Make sure the salvage sellers have a return if the rim is bent or cracked, most of that stuff comes off insurance wrecks.

Thrasherg; I had the same idea when I first bought my Super Tenere. Another set of wheels with knobbies on for off road. When I priced out everything from Yamaha it was well over $2000 USD, and that was about 2 years ago. Add brake discs and tires and the cost came closer to $3000 USD. Might as well buy another bike. Those prices were from online vendors, dealer prices were much more.

Gary I started down this same path of a dirt wheelset. My conclusion was not worth it for me. Before you spend big bucks on wheels mount a set of dirt tires i.e. Mitas E-09 Dakar and run them through their paces. Then try a set of quality 50/50 tires i.e. Mitas E-07 Dakar and compare. Yes the dirt rubber are better but not earth shattering so. Especially considering the dirt roads in your area that you'll be riding your Tenere on. The 50/50 tires will take you on the same roads without putting you on your back with just a little extra care. I know you are a very skilled rider so you'll be able to balance this out. Most of my fun dual sport riding is out of state, the ride there and back alone would kill a set of dirt rubber. Unless you like changing tires during a ride or trailer your bike then not a great option. 50/50 tire set will get you there and back a few times and let you enjoy the ride there instead of trailering or spooning tires en route. Also 50/50 will allow you to fully enjoy the twisty paved roads at the same time. Dirt rubber while manageable on the street fall short on pavement for spirited fun factor.

I did assembly a complete rear wheel though. Mine came complete with the cush hub and then I had to purchase a rotor, rotor plate and bolts. It is now plug n play and I keep dedicated brake pads for each wheel. But I use it now for remaining tire life management not for a dirt tire. I can get 10-12K miles from a rear tire running them down slick. If I have 8K miles on a tire and a 3-4K mile trip planned I mount the other wheel with a new tire for a safety margin. When I return home I mount the other wheel to use up that tire's remaining life on local rides or a planned shorter trip. Prior to my spare wheel I would be throwing away quite a bit of tire life on a regular basis.

Thanks everyone, like many of you I have been pricing out a spare set of wheels and the cost with disks, abs sensors, etc just doesn’t make financial sense for me, as mentioned I could buy another older dirt bike for the same cost. I am going to put the idea on hold for the moment but will still keep my ears and eyes open for a cheap set of wheels, just in case that once in a lifetime bargain occurs!! ::025::

Sounds like by the time you get it all together you could buy a used decent KLR.

I was lucky and got a pair of original used wheels of a S10 that had a catastrophic engine failure in the Uk and the cost of the pair was very reasonably at £200. All I needed to do was get some E07 and a used rear disc as original was well grooved all on eBay so another £150. I’ll just swap out the Cush drive from the on bike and the abs sensor plate. If I need new pads then so be it.
You just need to look out for the stuff and it’s out there somewhere on auctions sites.

Stridey, that was a smoking deal!

I know I spent well over $2500 for my wheel set, they are each complete with discs and ABS ring so it is an easy swap between street rubber and off road tires.
Having drank too much of the orange koolaid, I am looking to sell most of my spare stuff for the ST as I see a 1290 in my future...
