It's easy to load comprehensive map files into your GPS if you're traveling through North America or Europe, and apparently that new GPS/dashboard Trailmaster thing has files for South America, Africa, and Australia/NZ, but what about other areas of the world? I'm looking at heading to India in the not too distant future. I like GPS devices ok, but I trust paper maps a lot more, but I can't find any useful source for paper maps of India that are any better than the typical gas-station highway maps here in the US. So where can I find maps that show things like topo details, backroads, and so on?

You could try Horizons Unlimited. I know they have a library of .gpx files for out of the way places, and there's a members forum on there too. If anyone would have knowledge of a repository for maps of far-flung places, it's probably someone on that site.

If Google doesn't provide sufficient digital mapping, Michelin do a route planner ........... https://www.viamichelin.co.uk/web/Maps/Map-India

Otherwise most maps available outside India will probably be of the county as a whole, maybe the odd tourist area. To get detail you will need a mountain of paper. It's a big place with 1.2bn population after all.

Amazon India are showing an Atlas & link up to various other publications, like they do, so this might be worth a look ........ https://www.amazon.in/India-Atlas-Eicher-Goodearth-Limited/dp/938026237X

Have a good trip ................. KEN

The problem I'm trying to avoid is that cell data networks are still spotty in India, so Google maps is going to be hit-or-miss at best. And since I'm not planning a specific road trip, route planners aren't going to be useful most of the time either. I want maps like the 1:25,000 topo maps I can get here in the states so I can point to a spot, shove it into the map pocket on the top of my tank bag, and be able to follow the "interesting" roads to get there, including being able to do pencil-paper-compass navigation if I get lost.

Thanks for the link to HU. I'll definitely look into them, both for navigation and because they have links to shipping companies so I can maybe avoid having to receive my bike at the port in Mumbai.
