I'm mostly okay, banged up my wrist, not broken, but probably twisted and hyper extended it.

Other driver Ahole was DUI. No insurance, no drivers lic....... "hey man I can just give you cash to fix it" No you can't you can go to jail.

So while Ill probably have to pay out of pocket to fix the bike you can pay the tow, impound, DUI court costs, and bail money scum bag.

Nothing too serious. Rear lic plate holder is bent, turn signal is broken, front fender has a small crack. Luggage mount "bmw tow hook" got scrapped, engine bars got scrapped. Not worried about the luggage mount or engine guards or front fender. Without that stuff its like $75 in parts, whew load off my mind. Front fender is $100 but the crack is so small I probably wont bother doing anything with it. Ill get further into it tomorrow, but from what I could see with a flashlight on the side of the road that was it.

Update on damage.
Had a minute to go look at the bike on our loading dock in good light, not just a flashlight on the roadside.
He nicked my swing arm. Tiny bit of damage to the very end of it and a rub mark, there and on the luggage bracket on the right hand side. He hit me mostly in the tire big rub mark on the one side does not appear to be any wheel damage or spokes out of whack. I will pay careful attention on the way home for vibrations or anything weird. Didn't notice anything on the way to work after, but was still a bit full of adrenaline and took surface streets.

I take a tiny bit of blame for messing about with my phone so soon after being stopped. I know better. I am a preacher of heads up on a swivel at lights.... Just didn't do it this time cause I "needed" switch on my music before the freeway.... sigh.

Man, that sux. I have a hopped up RZ350 that I stupidly let a guy ride. He came back in the pool hall we were at limping. Stupid sob ran into a cable stretched across the road behind the hi school. It so happened that he had just got paid. We went straight to the Yamaha shop and he paid for the parts and labor. How lucky can youn get.

Years ago I was amazed to find out that a motorcycle getting rear-ended, is the #2 most common crash for bikes. I'm assuming , since you didn't mention it, that you were fortunate enough not to have to take a trip to the ER. Please tell me he was arrested at the scene. Again, at least you're ok, and the bike is still in service.

He kept trying to get me to move the bike from in front of his truck so we could move "further over". I said, no there is no shoulder here we stay put in the lane till cops show. Think he was going to run. Took me a beat to peg him for DUI, but thankfully a local cop was heading the other way, I flagged him down to babysit while waiting on the Troopers (their jurisdiction).

And yeah he got awarded a nice set of matching bracelets. Along with a free ride to the finest down town booking accommodations. His truck got towed. So lets see $700 for the no insurance $250 for no lic. I think its $1000 for an at fault accident with neither of those. $2500 + lawyer for the DUI case, + $500 in classes. $1000 penalty at DMV for the above. $300 for the tow and $75 a day for the impound. Cant get it out of impound till he gets a lic and insurance.

Amazing how cheap paying $500 a year for insurance and $20 for a lic is.....

No ER trip for me, different time I might have considered it for a wrist Xray, but the last place I want to be right now is a major metros ER. Ill follow up with my doc tomorrow if its still swollen or tender.

When I see those costs totalled up you can see that insurance is good value. In the UK the punishment for no insurance is a fine that's cheaper than paying for insurance, for younger drivers at least. How can that be a deterrent?

Glad to read that you walked away from it. That's a good result in the circumstances.

My state (NV) is very harsh on no insurance drivers with good reason. $700 is the base ticket price. I think they double the fine in an at fault accident with none. Might even be higher than that, but know its a much stiffer penalty. The DUI on top of it might add something as well to the no insurance thing.

Any landing you walk away from is a good one!

Sorry to hear you got rear ended Kyle. Pleased you're kind of ok.
Tallpaul. I thought in the uk they took the car away and crushed it if it's not insured?
Please tell me I'm although sadly I think it's more likely that you are.
We are WAY to soft in this country. My home is surrounded by scumbag drug dealers and I've seen them swearing and laughing at the police whom it seems can do nothing but ignore it. I'd be useless as a cop coz Id want to beat the s*** out of them. The cops here do a great job with their hands tied behind their backs by this softy softy 'look after the bad guys' aplroach. Poor cops...they have my upmost sympathy.
Hope you get the bike sorted soon Kyle

Do you have any additional brake lights on your bike? I added LED lights to the back of both panniers. I feel that they certainly help because they are super bright! Here is a pic.

They do crush them, but

They do crush them, but usually because they're a POS that is worth less than the storage charge. Some young person with a £500 Nissan Micra is going to baulk at paying £2500 for insurance when the fine is £300 and a crushed car. That's basically a nett saving!

The good is that your ok. Parts can be replaced. Injuries are damn expensive, and things never work like before the injury. Especially as we age.

Get that wrist checked. I hurt mine a year and a half ago. Some days it still hurts. I should have had it checked out when I injured it.

I could have been dragging parliament funkadelic behind me and he still would have hit me. I was stopped for at least 6 seconds before the impact.

But yes I have a hyper flasher rear stop light. Not that it does anything stopped, it rapid flashes on first brake application.

Now, that is very good advice.
At intersections when I'm stopped, I'm checking my mirrors every few seconds. Upon arriving at an intersection where you have to stop, always position your bike far enough away from the vehicle ahead of you and have an escape path so if you see a cager approaching too fast, move to the zone of safety or you will become "the meat in the sandwich.

Kyle I'm so sorry that happened to you. What a damn idiot!! Make sure you get your wrist x-rayed. The navicular bone can be broken and you not know not.

And no lecture from me on what you could have done to prevent this. With drunks there is almost nothing you could have done. Every single one of us have that one small moment where we are not on 100% alert. Thank the Lord that the drunk at least did not blow through that light at speed. You might not been able to post this warning.

I have a few take off parts from my bike. If something is broken and I have it, just PM me. I'll gladly send you what I have.

Thanks. Wrist is still tender, and feel like I've been hit by a truck (rim shot), but I haven;t got a sleep cycle in yet, see how I feel when I get up this afternoon.

I'm okay on parts, appreciate the offer. I got the turn signal "fixed" Its not the way it should be but eh close enough that no one including me will ever notice. Only thing missing is one of the reflectors off the lic plate holder and that's a trip to auto zone and $5.

Theoretically if he had insurance it would be replacing the engine guards $300, maybe the swing arm I don't know how they treat minor damage to a critical part like that area near the pinch bolt. If they would replace it bike would be totaled. Part has to be $600 + the labor. The lower luggage mount of left and upper luggage mount on right so $200 or whatever. Front fender $100. Lic plate bracket and fender would need replacing $100. New tire $250.

Since he doesn't.... Some sand paper and paint and a few bucks, won't be perfect, and won't be like it was. But even if I took the guy to small claims, its not like he has money to pay the judgement.

Very glad that you are not hurt that bad, and the bike has minor damage.

The problem with some of your money totals is this: Public defender is free. 5 days in the pokee for fines, and couple of weeks of community service. License? didn't have it anyway. Restrictions on driving the truck? Usually doesn't include use if needed for work, which is always.

A lot of debate on flashing rear lights. A number of new cars have it, most don't. In my last life as a LEO, there was always a debate on keeping the rear emergency lights on and flashing while stopped on a highway. California Highway Patrol does not keep it on (several other reasons included). The one and only time I have been hit in the rear was by a drunk driver while I was stopped arresting a drunk driver. My rear flashers were going.

Thanks! Here in NV they at least will pop him on the DUI heavy. I actually witnessed one 3 years ago and pulled him out of the vehicle, cops never saw him drive, so had to sit through court on it while they held 10-15 cases before his. Everyone got hit for $2000 on the first offense, + the mandated MADD school and DUI school $500. Then assessed the $1000 to reinstate their lic with the DMV. These were a mix of people using PD and paid lawyer, struck me funny that it all ended the same. Wheres Saul Goodman when you need him? I know our DMV is very strict on the fines for reinstatement, as you said it probably wont matter as he didn't have a lic in the first place.

Funny about the flashers, NHP uses them, but they have gone to those ultra small super bright LED bars. They must have a power setting on them as Ive seen them go from obnoxious to just a little output when they go from the run down to the pulled over on the rear facing. How did your accident turn out? Okay I hope.
