Well, the easiest way to tell is to deflate your tire and see how many it takes. I think you'll be surprised at just how many cartridges it takes to get the tire up to the correct pressure.

The drawback to the mini compressors is that it can take a while to fill a tire; they have a pretty tiny cylinder volume, so they don't move much air. Might take five or ten minutes to inflate a tire from completely flat.

I wouldn't trade my compressor for a bicycle style hand pump, but some of the foot pumps would be a viable alternative. They move a decent amount of air, only take up a little more room than a compressor, and best of all, you can stand up to use them.
