People love to spend money :)

ANYway, it's a 2 step process to ensure durability and utility.

1. Replace the rear rack with a sturdier aftermarket unit. I bought one on Ebay and it has served its purpose well (can't link it, as I'm not seeing it on there at the moment). There are many available for $150 or less, that completely replace the OEM jobber, and that's what you want.

2. Buy the case linked below. It comes with a nice back rest, LED tail light, lots of space, fully waterproof, and is $90 shipped. I've got about 150k miles using these boxes and I've never had any issues of any kind with them. Note that the mount plate is universal, so you might have to drill your own holes or whatever to get the box in the spot you prefer, but I've never had problems doing that.

Anyway, the point is that you can both upgrade the OEM bracket, plus get an escellent trunk solution for less than half the money that some folks spend on a trunk alone. It's a plastic box; there really isn't that much to it.

I don't think you can open some close fitting, top opening panniers with that box in place, I know my OEM panniers would not open with a similar shaped 46L Givi from my ST1300 that I was hoping to use. Ended up with the narrower 42L Outback case instead.

This is a good point for sure. The rear rack that I bought allows for a high or low mount. If I were to use the low mount, I would not be able to open the side cases on my bike. But, that's because as I don't ride with a passenger much, I have the top case mounted in a more forward position than I otherwise would. If, like the OP, I had passenger carrying as a priority, the case would be mounted father back, and the pannier lids would easily clear.

But ya, this is a consideration, no doubt about it.

Sorry to say, but that setup isn't going to hold up very long. The factory rack doesn't seem to be able to stand up to those kind of stresses for very long. Or where you able to go all the way through to the stronger sub frame?
Have now bounced around off road quite a bit with my simple top box setup and not only is it still sitting tight on the bike, but my buddy who was riding behind me said it is rock solid and doesn't move (which couldn't be said for his Givi Trekker box on the appropriate aftermarket rack).

I got the 42L version of the Givi trekker outback because you can't open the lids of the oem yamaha sidecans with the bigger top box. I have had 2 other monokey top boxes(one a 52L) and no problems with the mounting system. If someone has broken the front tabs it would be nice to know.
I'm glad to read this, thank you.

As I ride most of the time with a passenger, I want to know if the 42l Givi trekker outback with a pad (as a backrest) is confortable enough for her.

Thank you!

Here is a givi v47 on an altrider rack. I have the backrest but waiting to get my wife on and see how much room we've got.

Thansk for the details and pics Gents... after seeing all these, I may get rid of my Yamaha top box, that's very tight for a full face helmet, and get a Givi or something 45-50 liters AND get rid of my side cases unless I go on a multi day trip. :)

I've just bought an AltRider rack and fitted Givi Monokey mountings to it.
However, my V47 box (same as yours) will not go on.
The raised ridges on the underside of the box push against the plate before the box locates on the bobbins.
Did you experience the same issue?

It took a little bit of pounding forward, but I got it on. I haven't taken it off since, but will do so soon. I read that at least on other has had similar issues with a "tight fit". To be clear, there was no interference on my case, it was just difficult to get the case pushed forward enough for the locking mechanism to fit over the latch at the rear.

OK, that's interesting, thanks for letting me know. I hope you can remove it in one piece!
I'll persevere with it tomorrow and maybe look at raising the bobbins with spacers.
I shall report back with my findingsBox Rear.jpg.Box Front.jpg

Ok, I just went out and took it off and put it back on. Much easier this time. But, yours looks very similar to what I dealt with. Those little bobbins up front didn't want to slide into the grooves on the top case very easily. Some gentle force and eventually it all went in. At first, I did think I was doing something wrong, but I noticed the latch kept getting closer and I kept at it. I may have used a rubber mallet, very gently.

Successful mission in the garage today, got the V47 box to go on and off with ease.
Ended up having to space the bobbins up by 6mm.

I also didn't like the spacers that mount the rack to the bike (for three reasons)
1. Outer diameter too small (spindly look)
2. Way too long, mounting rack too high
3. Not anodized black like the rack

After trialing various spacer lengths, I ended up with 25mm front and 22 rear, 20mm lower than standard.
This still offered ample clearance for the grab handles and panniers.
Outer diameter will be 19mm and luckily we have an anodizing plant at work.

I'll be busy at work tomorrow ;).

Had the same problems with the Givi alloy rack.

That is why I prefer the SR371 which has longer, sturdier 'arms' at the back as oppose to the small bobbins.

All 6 spacers turned on lathe today and gone to the anodizing department.
I'll post pics of the setup after fitting next weekend hopefully.

Mike, I also had issues with the Givi plate on my previous bike, a Triumph Explorer.
It was too far forward for my partner and it was this that pushed me towards the AltRider rack.
I think she'll have more breathing space this time!

If anyone needs one, I have a Givi E460 (46L) case for sale. It's gray and has LED stop light and passenger pad. You'll need a Givi rack to mount it. I'll take $100 +shipping (which might get a little pricey for any distance).

If someone wants another comfortable backrest option check out the MEDIUM sized Motofizz bag. You can get them new at Aerostich or find them on ebay used. Love mine and my GF finds it more comfortable than the boxes. You can see a pic pf it mounted on an altrider rack on my bike if you scroll down this page on my blog...

I've got an Altrider rack with a Givi 47.
I went down at walking speed in the gravel and it came off and rolled about 5 feet. It was almost empty. HMMMM
