Shinko 705 handling

I'm presently running my Super T on 705's, and find the front the weirdest handling tire I've ever had. At less than 20mph, it feels like I'm on a steel grate bridge, and to an observer, it would look like I'm a rank beginner, drunk, or both. Kind of the same feeling tight steering head bearings give. It did this from day 1. The 805 and AX41 didn't do this at all, so it's not the bike. The rear wears a it quickly, but does ok at everything else. I'm running 36psi/42.

I probably won't wear it out before replacing it with something that handles "normally".

Anyone else notice this? Anyone? Bueller?

Is it worn funny / uneven? Can you post a picture of the tire, so we can see how the tread blocks look?

I have had the exact same experience. The front has a really weird turn in feel from the moment I installed them. It feels to me like the time I accidentally fitted too big a tire to the front on one of my bikes, kinda like the gyroscopic effect noticeably resists low speed turning. I’ve run the Shinko rear with other front tires and it seems to handle normally in that case, so I don’t think the strange feeling comes from the rear. Too bad because I wanted to like these tires.

I don't know how many miles I've put on 705s. Between my V-Strom and the S10, it has to be at least 40,000. I have a set on right now.

They do feel weird. They always feel weird at first when I put a new set on. They tend to feel like they're falling into turns at first. I don't know if that's due to the tire profile, or the tread pattern, or something else. That feeling passes pretty quickly for me as I get used to them.

And yep, they're a chunky tire in the front, and when they start to wear, the feeling can get even more pronounced. I've described it as feeling like you're riding on a waffle iron.

And yet, none of these things bother me all that much. The tire does really well in gravel, the rears wear decently for me (about 5000 miles on average). I've put 10,000 miles on a front, and it still wasn't worn out (but it was cupped). I actually preferred them on gravel to the Mitas E07s I've ridden. They stick well, and they're good on wet pavement. I know that others have complained about their performance in the wet, but that hasn't been my experience.

So, my experience mirrors yours; the only difference is that the idiosyncrasies of the tire don't bother me enough to quit using it.

Have a set currently on, and yes, reporting the same exact feel others are describing about. At low speed they vibrate alot, feels like yep, riding thru steel grated bridge. Goes off at higher speed, but then the singing starts. I just take it as an indicator of my speed without looking at the speedo. The higher it pitches, haha guess the faster I'm going. Its music. :p
And yes, the front turns into corners weirdly, feels like the a more squared profile tyre. One moment ur initiating a lean, the next ur already overleaned. The transition area, feels very squared.

But.

For the price I'm paying, I've got no complains Hahaha they are dirt cheap here in sg compared to other brands.
I just adjust my riding style to the tyres to prevent potential low side washouts.

is the tire rotated in the correct direction (I see the picture and its probably correct but i just woke and dumb question abound ) . I had a set and they were very nice ,no issues for me . that first set didn't even need balance weights .

I had a similar tread pattern to the 705 on my Beta (Kenda K761) and could never get used to the vague feel at the front end.

is the tire rotated in the correct direction
Good question.

When it comes to tires there is no in between for me. It's either 100% street tire or open block knobby when pulling off the pavement. I am still dumbfounded by the hundreds of threads and thousands of posts by riders that are more concerned about mileage than traction.

Another set of 705's arrived yesterday. They originally told me the front was on backorder, but it came together with the rear tire. The old front is not terrible, but it's starting to get the weird 705 cupping pattern. Cheap enough to just replace it. For anyone interested, I ordered them from Competition Accessories.....$185.48 for the pair.

I also had this feeling, it is so noticeable to me that I was concerned that a rim was bent. These are by far the worst tires I have ever ridden on. They do not last, the rear giving up in 7k and while they are decent off road, I could run a much more aggressive tire which would be better off road and better on road as well. I have MOTOZ Tractionator IT's on my DRZ and they are better on road than the 705's and they are what I would consider a 90% off road tire. The good news for the 705 is that they are irresponsibly crappy in the rain and they started having cracks from dry rot after being on the bike for 4 months. Awful.

Just to jump back in on this thread. I have an Orange Electronics TPMS on my bike and noticed that the Shinkos run hotter than other tires I’ve used. They heat up more quickly too. This tells me there’s more internal friction when they flex than other tires.

I also noticed that my speedometer, which usually reads 2 mph faster than my GPS with all the other tires I’ve used, reads only 0-1 MPH faster than the GPS with the Shinkos fitted. I don’t know which wheel the speedometer takes it’s reading from, but if it’s the front, and that tire is slightly larger nominally than others, it might explain both the heavier handling and the speedometer difference.

Hello RogerRZ. I have ran two sets of 705's on my bike. I had the same issues on both sets as you are feeling. I also had very strange turn in issues. Fast falling over and turning in but taking lots of effort to get the bike back upright. Not that this is good advise because I do a lot of things that are not right and probably not safe but I am also very aware of my riding and bike and the issues it has. I wound up running both the front and rear low on pressure and they felt a lot better to me. It seemed to me they would not flex and always seemed to be up on the crown of the tire. At low speed it would walk left and right running off the alternating tread blocks mainly on the front. As the tires wore you can definitely see that in the wear. I can see it starting already on your front even as new as they are. I did run mine a lot lower than my normal settings on tires. They felt better but never great. by the time the font had 6 or 7 thousand miles it still had 70 or 80 percent of the tread left but was cupped bad. I ran it on till it had about 50 percent of the tread left but it felt and rode like it was on alternating golf balls. Horrible to ride on. that is the only tired i have used on this bike that cupped like that. the rear felt good till it got a flat spot on it. then when you were leaned into a corner it would walk up on a high tread block then fall off on a lot tread block. the back of the bike was walking in and out while leaned over. Not a good feeling but that was at about the 7 or 8 thousand mile mark on the tire so it needed to come off too. Just a thought. try some lower pressures and let that tire flex a bit more. Be very careful trying that and monitor things well. Good luck.

I ran one set of 705s on my S10. The rear tire wore out FAST! I kept the front tire on for quite awhile, but experienced abnormal wear pattern on it. I moved on to the Motoz Tractionator GPS with the rear tire in the street direction and haven't looked back since.

I gotta chime in. I'm on my 12th 705 rear between my (sold) GS and my beloved S10. I simply can't complain. Not at the price point, There are better tires out there but I'd rather replace my rear around 5k miles anyway. I run to So Cal from E Wa every year through central OR and NV in 90 degrees, cruise set at 80 and never a prob.............Yes, they take some lead. PAY TO GET EM BALENCED!

I have been running 705's on my Tenere for a while and also on my DRZ for a time. On the second rear on the Tenere. I have never experienced the issues reported here. I like the tire for the riding I do here in FL. I may try out the MOTZ GPS or Adventure tires for a planned MABDR trip later this year to compare.

4 rears and 2 fronts without issue...until now. There is a vibration at highway speed that I can't get balanced out and the bars oscillate in left hand sweepers. Nothing changed except peeling off the burned up MotoZ's and installing 705's.

Given tire prices and availability as of late, I'll suffer with these until the rear needs replace.

I had/have 705s on my BMW. I don't measure tire Temps and they are not road tires (my buddies call them knobbies - LOL), but I live on unpaved roads and they ride fine whether on maintained dirt roads or the twisties (you gotta trust your tires). They have a certain hum, but that's expected. On my S10, I am running Motoz tractionator GPS, and so far I like them better than the 705s, but the 705s seem fine to me. One last thing is that I wish folks would use units when they report a distance - a mile is very different than a Km. Whatever you ride, do so safely, and when appropriate, with gusto!

Currently dealing with the same issue
JUST put these on last night and rode into work today
I'm not feeling very comfortable in the turns.
I feel like I'm about to fall over when I've barely initiated a turn!
I'm chalking this up to being brand new, but its so pronounced that I thought maybe I bent my rim installing it.. Or if I didnt tighten my axle enough and its slipping. I'm not sure but its kinda freaky!
Glad to know I'm not the only one. I'll let some pressure out of the front and see if it helps

I was a long time user of the Shinko 705, but an experience back in April soured me on them. I had to return two front 705's after finding that both of them induced a front end handlebar oscillation, something that I'd never encountered in tens of thousands of miles using them.

If you're interested in the issue, I covered it in detail here:
