I purchased the Shad SH-48 top case for my 2014 S10 in the fast blue color. My requirements were a case that would hold 2 full size helmets, have a very nice back pad for my wonderful wife, be easily removable, and be reasonably priced. I purchased it from Twisted Throttle, and it came to my house quickly and without any issue. The luggage rack on the S10 is nice looking but not robust. I did not want to spend more money on a luggage rack, so I purchased a 1/4" aluminum plate and cut out my own. I designed the plate to be larger than the stock and made more for the secure attachment of the Shad case. I have not completed the sanding and painting of the rack, but wanted to mount it all up to ensure the package worked as desired.

The is nice looking, and the quality id very good. Two full face large helmets fit inside, as will a pair of gloves...but not much else. I have put my Bell RS-1 and my pants in the case without issue. It fits more than expected for weekend jaunts if you pack light for one person. This model has the Shad double back rest which my wife loves. She says it is very comfortable and allows us to ride together much longer than without it. I really like their locking mechanism. With the key turned one way, you can open the case without the key, which is perfect as I commute with a computer bag. I can get off the bike, take my helmet off, put it in the trunk, take my bag out, lock it and go into work. My wife and I have done some picnics and being able to get into the case without a key is great. Turn the key the other way and the case comes right off and acts just like a piece of luggage. Very nice, within 5 seconds I can take the whole case with me into the hotel or wherever I am going. Overall I really enjoy this case. I think for $250 it was well worth it. ::013::

Looks and sounds great ! Hopefully some Yamaha engineer is paying attention to how a decent lock is supposed to work, the locks on the stock Yamaha bags I have are crazy, but the mounting system for the Yamaha saddlebags seems much better than some of the aftermarket Mounting systems .

I will say the lock was one of the selling points, but Even though it is more secure than Hillary's email server, it is a lock for honest people and most likely could easily be broken into if desired, like most locks. But the functionality is in the right direction.

the plastic OEM rear rack has been known to fail under stress. I'm sure you're aware that there are many replacements, but I wanted to post up a slightly more economical option. I bought one from Nomadics Racks on eBay for $95. It comes with a low or high option to mount, and is quite solid. One thing it doesn't do is provide a useful way to take advantage of the extra space you get under the rack in the high spot, but it is relatively inexpensive and well-made.

That's a nice looking rack for a great price too. My 1/4" aluminum one doesn't look as nice, but it was $5, and hidden under the case!

I had the SH-48 on my 2013 Tiger 800. It's so large that it I think looks kind of goofy. But, the quality is top notch. I believe SHAD makes most of the OEM cases for BMW.

Can you provide more details (and pictures!) of the aluminum rack you built for your Shad? I am looking to put a SH48 or SH49 on my bike.

I will get some new pics this weekend, can't find the originals. I took a 1/4 aluminum plate an traced the original rack onto the plate for the shape. Then I increased the size of the rack to fit the Shad base plate to have it look more integrated. It's easy. I didn't take the time to make it look cool like some of the vended ones, but it is strong and cost almost nothing.

I found a couple of pics that may help. Don't over think it like I did ::). I tried to show that it is larger than the original rack by mayb 2inches so the Shad adapter is better supported. I also set the Shad case back an inch or so to give my wife more room. Very sturdy and cheap. I will paint it this winter with bed liner spray to finish it off. Sorry my iPad is not cooperating and some pics are upside down...

Reviving an older post I know. I am moving my Shad SH-48 from my FJR to the S10. I ordered an AltRider rack from Revzilla and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. My wife really liked the SH-48 on the FJR so I am sure it will work for her on the S10. It is a very nice looking high quality topcase and I love the locking/release mechanism.

Reviving this post. I searched ebay for a Super Tenere rear rack made by Nomadics, but didn't find anything. Anybody have any info on this?

Thanks. It wasn't listed yesterday, so I did the "contact the seller" thing for a different rack that he had on ebay. He replied and said the ones for the S10 weren't listed on ebay, but I could order from his website nomadic-racks.com so I ordered one from there, same price, $109 plus shipping of $18 to IL. I see that he must have relisted them for 30 days now, with 2 available. Thanks for the reply.

Fred,
Why do you want this rack? What does it do for you?

Hi Brick,

With both my 2012 and 2014 S10, I have removed the rear seat and lowered the OEM rack and kept a soft tail pack on the bike at all times. I do not care for a hard tail box and that has served me well. Everything inside is kept inside of plastic zip lock bags to keep them dry. However, when I am on a multi day trip, I take that bag off, take it into the motel room for safe keeping, even though there isn't normally anything inside that I will need overnight. On my last 2 week trip to the NE, I thought that I might look into the best way to temporarily mount a hard tail box so that I don't have to remove and then replace the soft bag each day. I still want to keep the lowered rack configuration. I wanted a metal rack that would support more weight than the OEM plastic rack that I could mount a hard tail box for trips. Note that when you lower the OEM rack, you remove the plastic support that comes under it. Both the SW Motech and Alt Rider racks come in 2 pieces and the rack ends up in the higher position. The Alt Rider rack can be mounted without the lower portion, but you have to remove the hand hold brackets. I don't believe that the SW-M can be mounted without the lower portion. EDIT: I called Twisted Throttle and they said the holes in the top portion of their rack do not line up without the bottom bracket. in the In any case, they are both more expensive than the Nomadic rack. The Nomadic rack can be mounted flush with the removed rear seat and can be fitted with hardware to mount several popular brands of top box and is more reasonably priced. I haven't decided what top box to buy yet, but have plenty of time to shop before my next long trip. Here are a couple pics that show my 14 ES with the lowered OEM rack and with the soft pack that I keep on it at all times.

Not exactly an answer to your question but something to consider.
I installed a Altrider rear rack and then the Givi 47 from my FJR.
I could not open Yamaha side cases…
Without removal of top case.
I moved the Givi attachment hardware back approx 1” ( as far as allowable real estate allowed)
With this I able gently flex lids just enough to get them open without removal of GV 47
