Greetings, fellow Teneristi!

I'm glad to join this very lively forum. I got my silver XT1200Z First Edition in October. For me, there was no other choice: here in & around Munich, with the BMW headquarters and all, everybody and their moms are riding GSses. And everyone of them keeps telling you what a great bike that is and how accomodating the BMW dealers are while fixing all the minor and major reliability issues with the GS...

Anyway, I'm lucky to have made 16.000 km / 10.000 miles so far with my Super Ténéré (only one very minor issue concerning one of the headlight bulb connectors) and I'm loving the bike more with each km. I'm more of an on-road-rider, and of course I'm just loving the Alps, which are one hour away from here. I've also started to video some of my tours and uploaded them to youtube. One of the nicer ones is this: http://youtu.be/lZwhOwnnvOo
You can check out my channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/christophschm

The only major mod to my bike is a LeoVince SBK slip-on exhaust to replace the whimsy original.

Next week I'm starting a 8.000km/5.000 miles trip to Gibraltar/southern Spain, of course with the XT1200Z, and of course I'm very excited.

So much for now.

Christoph

A German buying a Tenere over a GS, if that isn't a testament to what a good bike this is then I don't know what is!

Welcome!

Greetings Chris, Glad you decided to join us. I have a quick question for you. How is the higher windshield compared to the original one from Yamaha? Keep the great videos coming!

I'm sure that had nothing to do with the fact that 700lb cruisers don't do dirt very well. ;)

Hey! Thanks for the nice welcome.

I was trying to make the point that most European riders don't act like me and just go for the Beemer. Actually, if you are on tour through the Alps, perhapds 50% of all bikes you see there are GSes from various generations. Here in Germany, the XT1200Z community is growing very slowly. The dealers are sitting on their demo bikes, as you can see in Germany's biggest vehicle market mobile.de (link below). It's plainly idiotic that Yamaha keeps you guys waiting while they have to sell the XT with big rebates here.

In the German Tenere forum there's a thread "Encounters with the XT1200Z", because the bike is still so exotic. The thread started to fill very slowly, but now there are more and more entries.

I think the main reason for the slow market are negative reviews in our biggest motorbike magazine, which is very pro-BMW. They said the ST is a good bike, but boring and slow compared to the GS (because it weighs 20kg more and the power is cut off in 2nd and 3rd gear). That's the prejudice you still keep hearing in every discussion with GS riders. Anyway, now more and more people recognize the brilliance of our smoothly powerful ST.

@MotorcopBBQ: For me at 1,94m = 6ft4 the bigger Touring windscreen works a little better than the original screen, which produces a very loud and aggressive sound in my helmet at higher speeds. The bigger screen is still loud, but it's kind of okayish. I also have a very low cut sports screen by MRA, which is relatively silent and comfortable. I'm only not using it right now because otherwise I would have to stop every 20 minutes to clear my visor from approx. 847 flies and insects.

It'll take some time for the Tenere to prove itself. I don't typically buy a first year bike, but nothing else was really tickling my fancy and the bmw's evolution in the past several years has not impressed me.

So I'm taking a chance on yamaha's history of dependability as well. The Australian blokes have been putting the tenere through it's paces and it seems to be holding up and they are finding it's weak points. (sump issue with stock skid plate and radiator fan brackets getting crushed on drops).

I still can't wait to get it.

"while they have to sell the XT with big rebates here. "???

So that's the plan of those who didn't preorder...waiting for rebate time :)) Seriously I am suprised they are having to provide incentives to sell them. The US market must be looking pretty good to Yamaha

Love the videos, welcome to the group
