New ADV rider coming from a cruiser. I bought a used Super Tenere that came with a smaller crash guard (see pics). Is this sufficient for general riding say 80% pavement, 20% gravel/off-road or should I get a bigger one?

I have never dropped a cruiser so far, but this S10 is a much taller seat (I am 5'8") and I plan to do more adventure (off pavement).

You'll need to find used AltRider if you go that direction since they don't make them anymore.

Alternatively, T-Rex makes great stuff. If you won't be doing a ton of sand a gravel or seriously rocky terrain, then the OEM like you have should be fine. You can add Givi to the set you have for better coverage. Givi won't handle hard drops on serious terrain but they'll work fine for fire roads.

ALTRIDER is the way to go for this motorcycle ! I understand they no longer make them, but it's worth finding a set or looking around. (They are around)

The 'Monster is right about Altrider's quality. The problem is that they have appeared to have discontinued the bars for the T-12. Bill is also correct about the T-Rex stuff being good, but right now they appear to be out of stock. Unkown if that's a forever thing, or just 'till they make more.

I also agree with Bill on the Yamaha supplied bars/plate that you have. They're not technically OE, but they are from Yamaha. Obviously, if you can't find others, you won't have any choice but to stick with them.

I’ve seen this style before break the 90* off the water pump with a gentle lay over. Normally the bar is turned into the dirt and the kill switch is a bit harder to get to. As someone might forget about the key in a panic situation. As the coolant is pumping out on the ground. “General info”
Hopefully your not 100 miles away from pavement out in the sticks. That trip would get a bit more interesting.
Hopefully people have brought there JB Weld for a ‘save your ass fix’……….. LOL

I guess you may have to check with Altrider as to what they actually have and don't have. Here is their current page and it appears to list their bars as in stock, both regular and upper, as well as a few other items:

See, I'm glad you found that/those. Sometimes when I check, they're there. Other times . . . . not listed. I don't know if I'm getting routed to an old web page, or they actually are back in stock.

I couldn't find the reference, but someone (maybe on here or maybe on a Facebook page) said they talked with Altrider and were told they weren't making any more bars so once current stock they have is gone, they're gone. I thought about it being an old link, so I started from scratch and this page came up, so who knows anything really? It's just unfortunate for folks just starting with a Super T that isn't already equipped for how the new owner plans to use the bike that it is now hard (or impossible) to get the items they need.

alt rider site shows they have lowers and upper crash bars for the Tenere , very pricey .
Yep, agreed! BUT.....mine have probably paid for themselves a few times over in not having to replace busted parts, dented tanks, broken cases, etc.. There was the time I was in New Mexico and a drunk lady backed over my bike, and the time in the parking lot at my apartment when my neighbor backed into my bike, and the numerous times my talent ran out before my confidence did, etc.

You'll defo need more scaffolding to protect those tupperware rad/ batt panels. 3 low speed layovers the givis have worked well. Granted, they provide little direct protection for engine cases/ waterpump. Good for servicing. I think I paid like 200? notes for them from Accessories International out of Miami.IMG20221113133510.jpg

had just the lowers on my 12 , survived and protected all on the white rim trail..... 2 dumps in the sand . no damage to bike .
on my 2019 I went all out and added the uppers to lowers . so far never tested but I know they will do the job.
expensive , yes , but so is possible damage to bike with lesser bars.
ok , so other bars also work , but alt rider gets nothing but praise from alt rider owners ...
get some thing cause its better than nothing .
a friends bike has had Yamaha crash bars , he has crashed and dropped his 2012 dozens of times , no damage to bike . so they work really well at a great price. so 10 years on his Tenere and no damage to bike or bars , maybe consider them.

Just looked on ebay. Last 2 listed. $652.97. They are worth it. When you scrape the paint off. The stainless won't rust.

Having dropped mine recently in the Pyrenees snow I reckon you’ll be fine with what you’ve got. Mine broke the OE plastic bar, but it did it’s job with just the handguard and mirror getting scratched. I’ve got Hepco Becker bars coming now, which are you similar to yours, as I don’t really want the full scaffolding.

I found Super Tenere TouraTech crash bars on FB marketplace for a steal, but they seem to have bad reviews. Any thoughts on Touratech? 1668967414400.png
