In today’s mail I received a recall notice from Yamaha USA
its for the front brake switch that so many folks have been reporting problems with, the recall covers quite a few models of Yamaha motorcycles but only the 2018-2020 XTZ12 Tenere’s .
They will be installing a new front brake switch.
So far I haven’t noticed any problems with my brake switch or cruise control but after reading about the problems many other Tenere owners have been reporting I’m glad to hear they will be replacing the front brake switch free of charge.

My FJR kid got a recall for his bike. He thinks o_O that it was for the front brake switch. Hw had been having problems with it back when coyotes were pissing on his front brakes. It hasn't acted up since he moved.

I’ve read that in the USA it’s “just” the 2018-2020 model years. What’s yours?

Could be different in the US compared to the UK

Got my recall notice in early December and it's a 2014 model. registered in 2015

Trouble is with Corvid restrictions and poor weather I'm not sure when I can get it done

My 2018 non-ES is affected.

You can go to this link, https://yamaha-motor.com/ look at the bottom of the page and look for "Product Recalls." You'll need to enter your VIN and prove you are not a robot.

Modification Number 990140

Bulletin Number M2021-001R

Brake Switch

yes my Tenere is a 2018 ES The way I understand the letter I received it’s supposed to be 2018-2020 Tenere’s but since Bokerfork from Utah received a similar recall letter about his 2016 maybe I’m somehow miss understanding the letter.

Thanks. His is a '14. The recalled tranny is going to be the 6-speed. Second gear failure used to be from hot rodding.

Has anyone seen the actual recall installation instructions for the brake witch recall. I looked at my '15 S10 and '19 Tracer GT and if the switch AND harness are included, it will be a pita to change out. The wiring harness snaps onto the switch on both bikes, but shows one part number for both switch and harness.
Part #12 is the switch being recalled.Screen Shot 2021-01-30 at 11.28.56 AM.png

I've not seen the recall instructions, but I have replaced the switch/harness on my bike. Not difficult at all, remove the switch and follow the harness, loosen any wire ties and release the connector. The connector is under the right side panel.

Guys, I went to the Yamaha USA site as suggested and entered my VIN number, it came up and listed the front brake switch recall 990140, but in a section below titled "Matching Publications for 2015 XTZ12EFR" it lists document 15V-176 which talks about an incorrectly manufactured shift cam segment stopper. Yamaha have written to me about the brake switch recall, but no mention of the shift cam stopper!! Does that mean I am not affected? Or should I be discussing that with my local dealer?

Cheers Gary
Always best to simply check with the Yamaha dealer, because there may be something else that you are not aware of and because their records show applicability for your bike's serial number.

Weird. When I went to the Yamaha recall site and entered my VIN # (2016 ES), it said the number wasn't valid. Today I just got my safety recall notice for the front brake switch assembly (and the VIN listed is for my bike). Which is great since the CC has been sketchy for awhile. It'll have to warm up a bit before I travel to the dealer though.

per my VIN# on the Yamaha webpage, my 2014 and 2016ES S10s are both affected, it appears the dates on the letter may be incorrect
