That is indeed sad news. I met Paul last fall when we met up in Ely, Nevada to ride the final stretch to the Tenere rally in Utah. He was a fine gentleman, interesting to talk with, a sailing enthusiast as well as a keen motorcycle guy. He had just finished adding a custom fuel tank to his S10 which made it his perfect travel motorcycle. My thoughts go out to the family. David

Just shocked. Paul was an outstanding person and extremely kind. Just a few months ago he helped me put on new tires on the Tenere. Very sad news.

Very sad news. Health or accident related? No details necessary, just wondering if it was fate or another human that did him in.

Paul and I had several discussions about LD riding and fuel cells in the past. Really nice guy with lots of fun planned on his Super Ten. I'm sure he will be missed by many.

I have contacted the caretaker for the Iron Butt Memorial and a stone will be placed in his memory at the memorial in Gerlach, NV. Paul was a member of the IBA.

For those who knew him well, consider a ride to Gerlach to pay your respects, share stories about Paul and do one of the things he enjoyed, go for a good ride. The memorial is about remembering our friends that no longer ride with us and sharing those memories so that they will never be forgotten.

Eric, where is the location of the memorial?

https://goo.gl/maps/Uqy7KTUh9wH2 Guessing the second location on Guru Rd.
The IBA Memorial is located at: 40.681903 -119.360822 or: D/M/Seconds: 40º 40 53.97 -119º 21 38,86

And yes, the second location you have marked on Guru Rd is the IBA Memorial. You can zoom in and see the red picnic table just above the memorial circle of stones.

My typical route when I came down from Portland was I-5 South to Eugene, then Hwy 58 East to Hwy 97. Follow 97 South to Klamath Falls, then pick up OR-30/CA-139 SE to Canby, CA, East on CA 299 to Alturas, (GET GAS), then 299 over Cedar Pass (this gets snow still in early spring and has a CA road camera), to Cedarville, CA where you pick up CA-1 which becomes NV 447 as you head South. That takes you all the way into Gerlach. There is 24 hr gas, food and lodging in Gerlach. FWIW, there is 24 hour gas in Cedarville as well with un-manned pumps.

Obviously there are other variations possible. That was just the shortest, fastest route that avoided snow potential. Hwy 26 is higher elevation coming out of Portland, which is not an issue in the warmer months. 26/97/31/395 thru Lakeview to 299/CR-1/447 is slightly shorter when weather permits. I've made that trip from Portland to Gerlach and back the same day dozens of times.

Just realized who this was about and it's the second death I've heard about today. The other was a retired colleague who I'd traveled the world with.
Am sitting here shocked.

While I won't be able to make it to the ceremony next weekend, my thoughts will be with Paul's family. I enjoyed the all too brief time Paul and I spent together last fall. David
