Riders need to be in Kennewick at the checkpoint hotel by 8 pm PDT to avoid penalty. Penalty is 3 points per minute and the penalty window runs from 8pm to 10 pm. 10:00:01 and they are DNF and out of the rally. The group is all over, from the Olympic peninsula to Wyoming and Southern Nevada. Some riders are doing a 1k day to just get to the checkpoint, others are looking more like a 1500 mile day to get in on time.

There are a fair amount of bonuses in the West to temp riders. Ferry rides to get to some, others in slow places like Old Faithful. Decisions made three days ago are biting some riders in the butt now as they figure out time/distance calculations and what planed bonuses they have to drop to get in on time. Others are aiming to trade penalty points for a big bonus, accepting that they will gain more than they lose by coming in during the penalty window. Time will tell how well each rider does and the second leg will bring a larger bonus pack to choose from during that 3 day leg. Anything from Alaska to California may be offered. Odds are good that leg three will be another dash back across the country, but with 4 days and a morning finish to plan for. More time to take indirect routes, more chances to get stuck farther away than you want to be as the clock ticks down.

Green Spot marks are for "OK" pings, orange are for normal automatic tracking pings. Some riders like to hit an OK at a bonus stop. It's possible sometimes that a bonus requires that, but I have not read the bonus pack this year. Most likely it's just rider preference.

FWIW - When I ride with a Spot, I hit OK at bonus locations and any time I stop for a break longer than about 10 minutes. At the end of the day I hit Custom, which will show as Green or some other color different than tracking. (It's been a while and I don't look at my own Spotwalla page very often). My custom message says that I am at my destination for the day and stopped safely. It makes my wife happy if I'm riding solo. Some riders do that reversed, using the OK for end of day spot ping and custom for bonuses.
I use the OK button to start and stop my day.

Most of the riders are in to the checkpoint. Penalty starts now. 10 or more riders are still out. The lag on the public spot page varies, up to 3 hours, I'm told, but it still appears that there will be several riders in penalty.

There is one KTM 1190 ridden by a rider from UT in the mix. 4 Super Tens, a KLR and the 2 Africa Twins. What kind of ride did you think this was? :D I hope the KTM guy does ok. I hope the ATs don't get too many flats, but only because they are friends of mine. What possessed someone to do the IBR on a bike with tubes is beyond me. I think the guy on the '86 GL650 is even tubeless. (there are a LOT of mods to that bike!) Probably not the Water Buffalo, but he's now out of the rally. He finished in '17 with no drama though, so he knows his beast well.

Hey Guys, I'm not a Super T owner but my friends, the Wellers from the United Kingdom are.
They are in the Iron Butt Rally and they need your help.

SIGNAL BOOST
IBR Riders
CHILOQUIN, OREGON
need a

SUPER TENERE REAR WHEEL

From IBR Rally Central:
The IBR 2up couple from the UK, the Wellers, had a blowout and before getting stopped, ruined the rear wheel on their Yamaha Super Tenere.

They are in Chiloquin, Oregon. If anyone in the area can help with a loaner wheel to get them get back in the rally, it would be awesome.
Please post this to any other forums which might be able to assist.

I will update this post with whom to contact directly once I have more information - meanwhile share the info

EDIT: looks like @EricV also has this covered

BTW, I did 2017 IBR on an Aprilia Caponord (so, no couch for me!).

Last word was that they thought they had a wheel. Not sure if from the forum member I PM'd down near them, via a welding repair, or??? One welder didn't want to try it, but I gave them contact for three different welding shops, two located where they were, one 25 miles away. The local dealer was also looking for a wheel or rim and how quick to get it. They are two up, so safety is key if they go with a welding repair and a tube.

83 650 Silverwing is tubeless by default.

1983 Honda ruling the technology.... So what happened in 2018? The first Africa Twins were also shaft drive. Someone is giving them bad advice! ;)

I can understand chain & sprockets on the AT. Being able to change gearing is a plus and if you give your chain a little love it will serve you well for a long time. I will never understand the tube type wheels. Someone was asleep at the switch with that one.

IMO tubes are the only way to go for hard core touring/off road on a machine like the AT. I easily completed an Iron Butt with tubed 18/21 inch tires. Honda did it right. With double rim locks and UHD tubes you can run a flat until the tire melts to the rim (I've done it more than once) . With a tubeless you need to get off the highway and fix right away. If these guys entered the IBR, I'm sure they prepped the AT's accordingly with good HD tires/tubes, lots of baby powder, and more than likely double rim locks on each wheel.

Honda was looking at this bike as something that will be taken in the dirt more often than not. For that purpose then tubes are the obvious choice. Last I checked both AT entries were well ahead of all but one Super Tenere.

I very much doubt there are rim locks on the AT wheels of our two IBR riders. (I hope they know to baby powder, but have my doubts). Flats you say? Any day, any time, I'll be back on the road with air in my tire while you are messing with spoons and a wheel off the bike. Riding on a flat is a no go on the street at 70 mph. Takes me <10 minutes to fix a tubeless flat. This event is not an off road event, though there are some off pavement bonuses.

Change gearing with chain and sprocket? Awwww, that's so cute! I use the TRANSMISSION to change gears. Get it right, ditch the lame, low tech crap that was just cheap and easy to produce. Especially at that price point. Just IMHO. ;)

On the Tenere couple - Unknown. Still showing in K-Falls, (I think, numbers change and I don't know their personal spot link), so not sure if they have progressed or just gotten it in to the dealer. They need to be heading North by 2 pm PDT tomorrow if they are going to make it to the checkpoint w/o being time barred.

Read on STUSA 'book page that they got a rim from a PNW rider. They ordered a new rim for the donor bike.
