...as if it was never linked/coded to a key.
Like a replacement ECU, brand new.

I inherited a used ECU from a totalled '12.
Only the ECU. The keys was sold with the ignition and immobiliser unit.

So my idea is to have this ECU flashed.
Have another set of keys cut and swap ECU's if and when I want.

If I choose to keep the flashed ECU, perhaps sell the non-flashed one.
Or keep it for shits-and-giggles.

So, according to the Service Manual, page 8-82, when the ECU is replaced, I need "Code re-registering key and standard keys" .

So I have the current red key registered to my non-flashed ECU.

Will it work if I have new keys cut to fit my current ignition.
Plug in the other/flashed ECU and code the new set of key that way?
Or does the key code the ECU?

I am of the opinion the ECU codes the key, otherwise you won't be able to recode replacement keys, right?

And when does the immobiliser come into play?

Being in the US, my FSM doesn't have info on the immobilizer or Red key bike stuff. But I'll be interested to see what you learn.

There is a statement that with the Yamaha Diagnostic Tool connected that states "If necessary, the ECU is rewritten using ECU rewrite data provided by Yamaha."

I suspect there is no simply way to 'reset' the ECU or get it to accept a new key, IF the key is coded to the ECU and not just to the Immobilizer. That would make it too easy for thieves.

I did some Googling, appears to be "unlocking" the ECU" service:

https://www.ostanlock.com.au/product/yamaha-xt1200-12-13-14-key-coding-service-lock-set-ecu-ecm-programming/

I would think following the "ECU is defective" route in my case?
It looks like you are correct. You may have to repeat the process when switching back to the original ECU, but it appears simple enough to do yourself. A lucky surprise!

Please post back when you have tried it and let us know if it worked as simply as it shows for an ECU replacement.

Planning on getting extra set of key to register with the flashed ECU, so no need to register keys.

Hopefully the used ECU will accept the new key registration w/o issues.

Since you are using the same Red key to register the ECU, I would suspect that the keys will interchange with either ECU once both ECUs are registered to that Red key. My only question is if the Red key will somehow realize that a different ECU is in place, despite both being linked to the same Red key?

I would think that the Red key's code would be set in the ECU and at that point the other keys will work with either ECU since both ECUs have the same Red key code.

I have similar situation. Have you successfully reprogrammed new ecu to old red key? Many thanks

No, I abandoned the idea.
The immobilizer supported the plan.
It is also coded with the keys and ECU, so when you swap ECu and keys, you'll have to swap the immobilizer too.
Which is a massive PitA, you have to disassemble thr choke ignition

Just a suggestion, but don’t see why it can’t be done by a knowledgeable person, how about cloning the “new” ECU ?

That way, you should have 2 identical ECUs that won’t require a new key set. Many reputable ECU tuners will copy the stock ECU in case the customer want to revert to stock at some time in the future.
