After totaling my Suzuki 1k V-strom l am getting serious about my next bike. Cage decided to turn left in front of me, and that was that. I have ridden with many ST12s, but never owned on. I currently own a couple of KTM 950s, an Adv and SE. But l need a distance bike for long tar/gravel roads. 6'4", 250# so a ST12 may be the one. So here l am doing my research.

Welcome from Minnesota!

I made the move from the DL 1000 to the Super Ten and have not looked backed. Once I had the saddle situation worked out (issue with me for every motorcycle) it has been more comfortable than the Strom but I confess I miss the neck snapping acceleration *L*

Welcome, from Texas. There's a member here that has owned/ridden both a T-12, and a 1290. . . . with an 890 on the way. He, @Dirt_Dad could answer some of your questions with personal experience.

Sorry to hear about your close up encounter with a car. Glad you're able to shop for a replacement.

If you have a couple of 950s, sounds like you have the excitement side of things handled. I also came off a DL1K to 9 years of Super Tenere ownership. Back when I did it the S10 was a clear step up in features and capabilities. It's still a more capable dirt cruiser, but depending on what year of Vee you had, it might actually be a step backwards in features.

No doubt the Tenere is great for your stated goals, but do keep in mind the bike's design is pushing 9 years old. Excellent bike for 2014. Consequently, it is not priced like a bike with lean over ABS, TFT, slipper clutch, or even auto-off flashers. I believe it's even less than a new DL1K. If you value low maintenance shaft drive, it a clear leader in cc's per dollar space.

For me, I was just telling my wife I'd be good with 4 bikes. The 4th being a long distance, comfy adv bike. When she asked what, it was an obvious choice. A base model GS1250. I can and do go long distance on my KTM SAS, but I hate making it wear cases and act like an ordinary bike. It deserves better, but it has no reprieve on the horizon.

the yamaha is better on the road than any of those bikes listed above. handful in the gravel coz of its weight. but on the road? they nailed it. latest model you can lowest k's. etc

This had a lot of useful information, thank you @Dirt_Dad
