I sent an email to BestRest about this as well, and here was the reply I got:

[T]he filter will collect water as advertised. When that happens two things will happen:

1. If your fuel has any ethanol additives, the water will bond to the ethanol and <slowly> pass thru the filter. That can take several days or weeks. During that time the engine will run normally and a bit of water isn't a problem. Almost all of the water will remain in the bag.

2. As for constantly removing the bag, that's not necessary. When refueling you can look down inside and see if there's accumulated water. You'd know this when your gas tank is nearly empty, but the bag shows some fluid sloshing around. That slosh is water buildup. Should this happen you can gently pull and twist the filter up and out of the tank, pour out the water and reinstall.

I've pulled my own filters half a dozen times to dump water, and as long as I do it carefully it's not an issue. Remember to use an install tool to spread the bag after it goes into the tank, otherwise the bag can remain folded and that will slow down fuel flow when you refuel the bike.
If I had some water buildup in the filter I would use a Mityvac or similar with a soft hose. Carefully suck it out rather than removing the filter and risk damaging it on the tank opening.

I'm looking at this from the perspective of "travel in distant lands", not "3-day jaunt to Fundy with my buddies".

Mityvacs are hard to come by in third-world countries. To give you an example of the situation I'm focusing on: my wife is from India, so we watch a lot of news from there. Last week, there was a segment reporting that a gas station had been caught adulterating fuel, likely because the price of fuel was climbing fast and the operator wanted to boost profits. People were finding that 25% (or more) of the "fuel" they bought was actually water. If I had tried to fill up at that station, the Guglatech would have completely filled with water in less than a minute. Even when the station operators aren't actively trying to scam the customers, fuel bought from places way out in the sticks has a good chance of water contamination through simple neglect. It's very easy to accumulate several tablespoons of water with just a couple of tankfuls, not to mention dirt and other trash.

Well…I guess its my turn to change that filter! Bike is at 95500km, fresh plugs, fresh filter. The bike was struggling between 1000-2800rpm and during acceleration.
After checking everything , the in-tank filter was the last thing…

So did it run any better after changing the fuel filter ?
to me the filter really doesn’t look dirty enough to cause running problems

I don’t wan’t to clean the old one . The bike was running but I could feel hesitation at acceleration and between 1000@2800rpm.

I’ve got the tea bag replaced but getting the sensor hooked back on to the pump module has become a real pain. Any suggestions to get this clipped on?

I was taught to never buy gas when the fuel truck is filling the tank, it swirls up the grit in the tank. Not sure how some say it's filtered. Who changes the filter? I'm pretty sure it's not the girl in the store.

Gas is filtered everytime it is transferred. From the loading dock to the gas station. It's filtered going in the tanker truck and filtered when the truck pumps it. By the time it gets to the pump filter. It's been through numerous other filters.

Modern day fuel pumps, whether loading the truck at the loading rack or pumping into your car at a gas station, have multiple filters for sediment. Also the large tanks mostly have millions and millions of gallons pumped in and out every week so sediment is kind of like hitting the lottery, there is not much chance of it teaching your cars fuel tank. As for water, today’s fuel pumps are computerized and have sensors that shut the pump off if as little as 1/4 of a teaspoon goes through the line through the pump. That sensor alone HAS to be replaced if water hits it. At a cost of about $400. There is a great deal of incentive to insure there is no water in the system right there. Also, petroleum companies in the last 15 years or so have begun co-mingleing additives at various loading racks, so there is no guarantee that the sign on the station is the refiners terminal. I have personally loaded gasoline for one brand at 5 different terminals. There is one major reseller here in the northeast that will load Super and Regular at different terminals because the prices vary and Super is cheaper at one terminal then the terminal the Regular is loaded at!!! Go figure.

So therefore, there is no need to replace the filter?
