Hmm haven't updated this in awhile.

So while waiting on parts I got around to cutting the oil filter apart to give it a look see.

Clutch - 2.jpg

A quick run around the lip with a Dremel gets it apart. I was quite pleased with the overall construction of the Yamaha (Denso) filters.

As expected I found savings inside the filter on the dirty side.

I peeled the filter element apart in a few places to check the clean side and all looked well. The abundance of lacquer at the top and bottom of the filter to hold it together is a good thing but did make this job a little more difficult. Inferior filters come apart a lot easier which risks internal blowouts.

Next on the list was waiting for parts. And waiting. And waiting. Finally nearly a month later I had all the necessary parts together.

Am I starting out with a tasty burrito?

Not this time. These cheap to-go containers you can get in three packs from the dollar store for, gasp!, a dollar are great for soaking your friction plates. I always soak overnight ahead of time.

No real pictures in process as I was chugging away. Lots of time spent thoroughly clearing out any chance of debris and making gasket mating surfaces shine. In goes the new Barnett pressure plates and springs. The kit comes with three sets of springs you can mix and match, six 32 lb, six 55 lb, and 6 70 lb. I went for almost full strength and used 3x 55 lb and 3x 70 lb for a combined spring rate of 375 lbs. We'll see how I like it.

No ride yet as the wifey got home just as I was finishing warming it up and checking oil level. I do, however, need to grab some English muffins for breakfast tomorrow and do think I'll be riding the Super Pig to accomplish that goal.

PS - I got the Barnett kit from Summit Racing. It was a little bit cheaper (the parts were stacking up fast!). They drop-shipped from Barnett but I got it fast. Indeed it was the first part I received in the whole mix with various Yamaha parts having to take the slow train from Japan (in fact I'm still waiting on the big O-Ring for the oil tube under the oil pan and my second oil pan gasket).

I should be getting my Barnett kit today. Sadly I'm on the injured list so I'll be waiting until I'm healed up to install it. I hope mine comes with three sets of springs. I thought they only had 12 total in the kit. I got mine on Ebay but it's coming from Modesto and the seller has been reliable for past parts.

These Barnett plates should be 'mandatory' on this bike, Ha-Ha-Ha... Feels better and work SO much better. I just recently installed one on a customers bike, after arriving home, they wrote and said WOW, when the Barnett hooks up you feel it hooked up ! Ive told folks over the years, 'you never know how much this bike slips the clutch until you install a Barnett'. That first ride you realize how much the stocker slips all the time.

It defiantly felt firm and my hand is getting more of a workout with the stronger springs. I can't really objectively rate performance though as I rode it just under two miles and it's been nearly a month since I rode the stock bike. I'm hoping I don't have to take the clutch cover off and swap springs because I'm a wimp :)

Dont hesitate to swap the springs. They are all stronger than the stock set up. But if its a bear to pull the clutch in all the time, don't punish yourself, try a softer combo ! :)

Yeah I'm going to give it some commuting time and see how it feels. I like a nice, firm lockup so strong springs are a good thing!

I just got mine and am impressed with all the combinations of stiffness. There are a total of seven. I decided to go right in the middle with 2 of each. I have not used Barnett products for over 30 years!! The last bike that used them was my 81 KZ 750. the Barnett springs and plates cured my clutch slipping problem. I can see the product line is still very high quality.

So ran it to work and while tolerable the springs were a little bit irksome because I'm a weakling. That marked time for the first oil change so I opened it up for inspection and swapped out to three black and three gold short springs for a total of 261 lbs. force. I'm planning on putting a couple hundred miles on it tomorrow to see how much of my family's property burnt in the Bobcat fire. We'll see how that feels.

For fun when I did this job and swapped to odometer to log the service (I'm kinda anal about that) I found that my mileage was a palindrome.

Are you guys still happy with your Barnett pressure plate? I need a new one and don't know if i should go for a new OEM plate and spring or for the Barnett. I like the light pull and have no problems with the feel of the OEM clutch.
