ACD is the way to go. I'm using one with my2014 and it's just perfect.

I originally had a SW Motech which took a pretty good hit and got bent, The SW Motech did its job but I chose to replace it with an ACD. I can say that the ACD gives much better protection.

Hoping to install ACD on my 17 ES.
What's your experience on oil changes after you installed the ACD?

I've been extremely pleased with my Ravetech plate. It's convenient for oil changes compared to some others because you can unbolt the plate from it's bracket at the front and not have to mess with the engine mounting bolts or replace those bolts with studs. etc.

Jeff, Explain how the oil change would go? I'm not seeing the ease from the pictures.

I'm re-farkling a new S10 and looking at all options.

My SW-Motech took one hell of a beating thru two bikes and didn't fail me although the bottom mounts are in the sump.

Thanks

Welcome aboard. It'd be great if you introduce yourself as asked in the intro email.

Search is your friend and it works. There are literally a couple of dozen threads already discussing the pros and cons of different skidplates. No problem in asking, but you probably will get faster results if you do at least a quick check first.

Be kind to your moderators and use the existing sub-form categories when starting a new thread.

Thanks

I'm also in the market for a skid plate. A big consideration for me is how loud it is. Nothing worse than a constamt metal churning sound coming from your engine on freeway

Here is one that hit a deer, a concrete culvert, flipped and landed upside down in a ditch (all the same event) and the bike survived just fine to be ridden home by somebody else. I went to the hospital. The bike was totaled. Rumbux skid and side bar combination. I bought the exact same product for my new Tenere, which has slid down the road too. I only needed touch up paint that time.

If you look close at the picture, the bottom of the skid-plate is bent and the lower side bar is a little tweaked also. The bike hit the culvert with the right side of the plate. The side wing is almost touching the plastic. The engine and sump did not have a scratch on it. No oil loss. Absolutely amazing product.

You remove the two lowest large bolts from the front and then there are three bolts at the back (two on the right and one on the left) and the whole plate drops down. That vertical splash guard and underlying bracket remain attached to the bike's frame. The drain plugs and oil filter are easily accessed after the plate is dropped, even with the splash guard in place. The Ravetech plate is frame-mounted.

I lined the inside of mine with dynamat material. Alternatively you could spray some kind of undercoating or rhino liner stuff in there to dampen the noise reflections.

Oh okay. I see now. It was the mud guard that was throwing me off.

It looks like it uses the same engine mount bolts as Alt Rider crash bars?

So glad to hear you are OK and the rumbux did it's job, I just ordered a Rumbux kit for my 15' :) Can't wait to take her off road now!

I am fine now, but the wreck hurt me pretty badly. I bought my 2015 while I was recuperating.

You will not be disappointed. The Rumbux uses very strong frame mounting points. The plate comes off separately from the bars and makes it very easy for oil changes. The ACD is a solid unit also. Most of the rest of the skid-plates around look strong, but have wimpy mounting systems that will collapse when it counts.

On the grey bike in the pic, I needed to remove the side cover to get at my battery after the wreck. Two large guys with a 6 foot steel wrecking bar could not straighten the wing back out. I had to unbolt the bars and remove it to salvage my GPS lead.

Not sure about the altrider bars but the Givi bars I have use the same engine/frame mount locations. Luckily the Givis come with some slightly longer bolts.

I was intrigued so emailed Alan at Ravetech. He said his skid plate mounts in the lower engine bolts. Right above the header.

I also asked about the cutout for the oil drain plug. The pics online show just one. He said he could add the other or not cut any. I prefer none since I've never used them to change the oil. I asked about a cut out for the left side vent tubes and he said no problem but we'd have to work out where the cut out would be located. He no longer has an S10 to look at.

Finally i asked about mounting bolts. I would rather have buttonhead than hex and he had no problem with that either.

Pretty accommodating.

Another happy ACD owner. Oil changes are a pain without removing it, IME. Removing and re-installing it is a pain, IME. I live in FL, so I don't keep it installed all the time. It only goes on for long trips, tours, vacations, etc., before or after which I'm usually doing an oil change anyway.

So, EVERY time I've had it off pavement in big rocks, I wind up having at least one event which produces a loud, sickening, "BANG!". I've dropped off little ledges and landed on it, drug it over rocks, rode thru LOTS of gravel.

At some point following a trip, there's a ritual of me hosing it out and hammering dents out of it. Every scar on that thing justifies its existence.

I didn’t know the button head bolts were an option, maybe I’ll contact him as I’d also prefer those. My plate has a cut out for the foreword drain bolt but not for the main rear one. Doesn’t much matter to me since I have to drop the plate to change the filter anyway.

Exactly what i told Alan. I've never use those hole on any of my skid plates so would rather not have it.

But what do you do for the vent hoses on the Ravetech? Both side just lay in the plate?

I use dirt bike skid plate foam with mine. Not only does it prevent any skid plate resonating, it helps deaden engine noise and fills the gap between engine and skid plate preventing dirt, mud and rocks from accumulating there.
