The rear cargo carrier on the S10 has a 5 kg capacity. Is it safe to exceed that load or will the bike fall apart or the sky fall in?

The stock plastic cargo carrier will break but there are stronger aftermarket parts or you can rig something to increase load capacity.

You can carry more, but need to be careful. Keep weight forward as you can. I carry a lot on mine quite often. Never broke anything yet.

I've never really worried about it

And that's config has gone offroading with the blue bag on top weighing 40+lbs. It's of course on the rear seat and the carrier, spreading the load.

Also carried it more on the rear rack, still full of camping gear etc

Maybe I've been lucky, but I think they can handle a lot more weight than the advertised 5 kg :)

My OEM rack bit the dust with a Givi V46 mounted on it. I replaced it with a Happy Trails Rack, with the riser. Carries all my road tools. Very sturdy, but not sure if they still sell them.

My OEM Yamaha top box has 65,000 miles of use, other than the original lock falling out and getting lost when it was nearly new it’s been trouble free, believe the weight limit is about 11 pounds and when Traveling it’s usually pretty full but I doubt there has ever been 11 pounds of stuff in there. The reason the lock fell out was because whoever installed it probably didn’t use blue Lock-tight on the screws like they were supposed to.

When I got mine, the riser was about 2 1/2" and puts the top just even with passenger seat. It requires some cramming to get the tool kits and tire inflator in, but that does minimize the rattling. (Tool kit bags do wear from shaking.) I formed a plastic front to keep tools away from the passenger seat, and a rear door to enclose and lock the tools. I used rubberized tape to seal strap holes for the tool box portion to make it somewhat water resistant. Not elegant but effective. I also added mounting posts for the Givi V46 Monokey top box, but I rarely use it. I have an old soft tail bag zip tied on it for now.

Here is my setup. I have experienced and seen too many subframes break from off road pounding. I figure the Yamaha engineers are a lot smarter than me. So I abide by not going over the recommended 11lb max weight the standard carrier was designed for. The Pelican 1150 case has everything I need to do a repair without stressing the parts.
