Hi all. Last summer I boogered up the lock install in my top case and ended up drilling the cylinder out. I used another one of the locks that came with the bike to replace that.

I recently odered the OEM side cases, and have a new lock cyclinder on order. For the locksmiths among us, I seem to remember somebody modifying the pins in one cyliner to match the other, so they could use the same key again...something about filing them down to match?

I'm a noob when it comes to locks, so any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

-Pull the lock Cyl apart.
-Use needle nose pliers to "pull" the slides out.
--Rearrange the slides and file them (if needed) to "make" the key fit.
(With the desired key in the cyl, the slides will all be flush, allowing the cyl to turn.)

Piece of cake.

My bike didn't ship with locks. The dealer received them under warranty and paid to have them keyed. I don't know the exact price but it was in the range of $50 for both.
I've read in several places the locks are naturally tight, and mine seem to be especially tight even being professionionally keyed. I recommend pricing a professional. It may be cheaper in the long run.

Thanks to both of you for the advice and guidance. We have long winters over here, so I'll probably try my hand at re-keying it myself. If I botch the job, I'll go the locksmith route as there are plenty of them where I live.

They're actually not tight at all. The mechanism in the cases is what makes the locks a bit hard to turn at times.

Thanks bro! I completed the re-key today and it went smoothly. I popped the slides out by pushing on the bottom of them, so if the springs launched they would do so into a napkin. Ended up with 3 out of 5 slides that were flush after the re-arrange, and just pulled the ones that weren't. Consulted a local locksmith on whether that would weaken the lock, and he said no worries.

So are you saying that you only have three slides in? Why didn't you just file the others to fit? If it's mean't to have five and you only have three fitted then it's weakened the lock. Not that it matters as the hook part of the lock that holds the lid closed is plastic anyway, so they're not exactly high security :)

The locksmith looked at the lock and said it would not be appreciably weakened...I'll take his word for it since he does this for a living and the advice was free.

Because of the design of these particular slides and the size of the ones I needed, filing them down would have had the same effect as removing them. I would have had to actually ADD material to one side of the holes on the inside of the slides to make them work properly. The Locksmith could not source this particular brand of slide, so I couldn't get new ones of the correct number.

I gave the modified cylinder a mini stress test with a straigh-slot screwdriver and it didn't budge. Good enough for me.
