I am buying an Altrider Skid Plate and Lower Crash Bars and can't decide if I should get the upper bars as well. I understand they increase rigidity a little and provide a good aux light mount location. Can anyone speak from personal experience about the uppers? Thanks!

Can't speak from experience of having the uppers, but I have the lowers, and in all the off road falls, the bike has been protected. Never have seen any reason to buy the uppers. Bars are strong enough to not bend. And with black semi-gloss paint, no one knows it has been down if more than a couple of feet away.

My one side is goosed in a little. I’ll be yanking it straight with a chain and getting uppers soon.

Just the lower bars. But they will bend a little, didn't find this out until i had to take them off one day.
Just ever so slightly off i had to get a small pry bar to line up the side mount holes.

How many times have you all dropped the bike on those lower bars? Only a few times or many?

I just ordered my Altrider lowers. Woo!

The only thing i don't like about the uppers is you cannot get upper side panels off with them in place. ::022::

I have lost count in the dirt and sand. I just keep a can of black semi-gloss paint in the garage to fix the cosmetic damage, and all is good again.

During Sand off-road training one the bike's needed some tool help. I was able to get to the tool kit in the right side panel with the upper bars without any problems.
No experience (yet) in regards to the left side panel

If you hit something hard enough, the failure point on the alt rider bars is the frame mounting tabs....

And chain pull them all you want, without bending the flat mount back into shape you're not gonna get anywhere with it. I will say I did drop the bike lightly plenty of times before I dropped it doing about 15-20 mph on a half buried rock.

Ask me how I know ... ::025::

Would these crash bars be a good place for hyway pegs or is there a better place??
Or is the blasphemy to have some on Adv-bike? ;)

 Highway pegs???? WTF????
Yes why not..
I have long legs and can't decide on that one yet and it's only been 79 thousand miles of thinking. ::)
I like these bars haven't had anything to compare them to.

If you ride the miles. no reason not to put some highway pegs on. Kuryakyn Longhorn highway mounts and what ever HD centric pegs you like. I had these laying around from a previous Road King I used to own, so it was easy to decide to use them. You will need to order as parts to ensure you get the correct diameter mounting clamps. I don't know what the bar diameter is on the AltRider. My Rumbux are 1.0".

I've only ever had one really good off on hard pack and the throttle side lower bar has been compressed about a 1/2 inch in towards the side panel . Saved everything! ! But now I can't remove the panel to access fuses . I will apply some down and outward force to open this up . Great Crash protection . I only have the lower bars .

I highly recommend the uppers. The radiator sets above the lower bars. And yes, a great mounting point for lights. And they also protect part of the harness behind the upper right fairing. I had a tip over in the garage with my fairing removed and I was glad to have the upper bars.
