Hey Everyone!

Wanted to introduce myself. Coming to you from Louisville, KY and hoping to snap up a Gen 2 S10 sometime next year. I go on an annual cross-country motorcycle camping trip, generally with mild-to-medium offroading. Have previously been doing the trips on a 1998 Bandit 1200, and it's hardly a relaxing journey. Looking forward to finally getting a bike built to the task I am asking.

Can't wait to learn all I can, and pick up a bike that will put my riding partner's BMW in the dirt.

Welcome from Texas. I think you will pleasantly surprised when you make that trip on a Tenere; right tool for the job and all. For the record....MY recommendation is go with an ES. Nothing wrong with a non-ES....I just think it's "more better".

I would prefer an ES model, personally. However, with so many bells and whistles being included in the Gen 2 models, I would be perfectly happy with a standard Gen 2. All I really want is cruise control, but I have to admit that the electronic suspension adjustment and heated grips as standard seems awfully attractive. All it comes down to is price.

Welcome from Kansas.
I agree with Sierra. I also went with the ES model. At the time I didn't think I would ever need all of the bells and whistles but if you go from 1 up to 2 up riding very much the electronic suspension makes it all worth it.

Good luck in your search, generation 2 is a wise choice, there are some very nice deals on used Tenere’s.
I'm keeping my eyes peeled. I damn near pulled the trigger on a 2015 S10 two months ago, but didn't want to finance it. Saving up so I can provide cash-in-hand this go around. The waiting is killing me.

Two-up riding isn't really much a concern for me. My wife doesn't like to ride, and my kids are much too small. I pretty much just commute and take one or two long trips each year. However, if I can find an ES model at the right price, I'll definitely jump on it. I'm simply not going to "hold out" for a model that is largely unnecessary for my needs. The heated grips sure are nice though, but those can be fitted aftermarket pretty easily.

I thought the heated grips would be great. Only to find out that having hot hands and not being able to feel my fingers at the same time didn't work. This is when riding in the low 40 to 30 degrees. At that point heated gloves work the best for me.

I’ve never actually used heated grips before. Are they really that useless? That’s discouraging. I was really looking forward to some easy winter riding.

I had a 2013 Tenere without the heated grips, ES, and cruise and now that I have an 2018 with all these it has definitely been worth the upgrade. The heated grips work really well for me from 45 degrees and up. I wonder now why i never put them on my 13.

I rode the Tenere about 100 miles today in the low 30’s Fahrenheit, just wearing non insulated Held Steve glove, heated grips set on 2 bars, my hands were perfectly comfortable, I also have insulated gloves but it was dry and sunny so I didn’t need them Today. But obviously different things work for different folks. I did buy a set of heated gloves years ago but after finding out how much extra hassle they were I returned them For a refund. The first time I installed heated grips on a motorcycle was back in about 1997 and every bike I owned since has had heated grips.

The engine upgrades and all of the added extras are the primary reasons I'm looking for a Gen 2, but it's nice to know that the ES model benefits really are worth considering.

It sounds like that even if I don't get an ES model, aftermarket heated grips are in my future (at the very least).

It sounds like a quality-of-life improvement that, once you get it, you damn near can't live without it. I'm always looking for added extras that make riding more convenient and pleasant. The more comfortable I am, the fewer excuses I have to take the truck.

I say go ahead and try the heated grips. Looks like they work well for some. The different stroke for different folks saying applies here. I have heated grips and use them. From the 40 on down i have my heated gloves with me also.
