Around 17 min you can hear it

Was riding to the back of teh dragon when my bike started to make a noise, in the middle of nowhere. Wondering what the noise is. It starts at min 17. It doesnt affect anything that i can tell, it moves fine, engine is quiet. I put the bike on centerstand and if you put it in drive it makes that noise, but no idea where it is coming from.

Any ideas? If its a shaft drive problem or transmission would i notice anything with it riding? Someone mention wheel bearings. Any input would be appreciated

17 min mark

A Gen I, how did the rear spokes look? That's about the only thing I can think of coming on all of a sudden.

It would probably help if you post another video depicting the noise while the bike is on the centerstand. Does it make the noise when you put the bike in neutral and spin the rear wheel by hand, or is it only when the bike is in gear? There are three bearings back there; two in the wheel and one in the hub clutch. I'd check the simple stuff like that first.

i tried to do that, and bike doesnt seem to make much noise anymore. But when i turned it on put on the centerstand the engine light came on and gave me a error code of 69. Before it didn't have anything on the dash.

I believe that's an error code for the front ABS sensor. It means there's no signal coming from it. Maybe the sensor or the wire got damaged. It shouldn't have anything to do with a noise coming from the rear area of the bike.

Nothing like this. You cannot put Tener on the center step and turn on the transfer. Your check will immediately light up. Now you can only reset it in Yamaha. In Russia, it costs $ 15-20.

Ss1's post jogged my memory.

If you put the bike on the centerstand and put it in gear and let the rear wheel turn, what you're actually doing is disabling the ABS system on the bike. I've never done it, but I read about it a long time ago. Apparently the computer senses the difference when the front wheel isn't turning but the rear wheel is, and it disables the ABS system. You should get a check engine light and the ABS light should light up, but I don't recall reading that you'd get a 69 error code when you do this. It's been so long since I read the procedure that I can't recall about the error code.

I think it's true with Super Teneres sold in some European markets that you need a service tech to reset the ABS and check engine light when you do this, but for US models, just cycling the key should reset everything.

Did you also get an ABS warning light when you put it in gear on the centerstand?

Busted spoke? I think the warning light is probably an artifact of running the bike in gear on the center stand.

Driveline typically makes very scary noises when run in gear on center stand, this seems to be normal (so don't go on a wild goose chase based solely on how it sounds on the center stand).

Check the Rear Brake Pads.
When they wear down to the metal backing-plate it will start contacting the outside edge of the Brake Rotor on a tiny little "Nub" that is part of the backing-plate before it starts really grinding fully.
This can be intermittent at first.

Seems like its not a shaft thing, this weekend i hope to start tearing into the bike. Just wanted to have some things to look forward to. It seems like possible wheel bearings. Never done bearings on a bike, but even if its not its a good idea to change them im t 68k.

THanks for the help, ill post up if i figure it out.

I changed my rear bearings at 60k miles. They still seemed ok though. After changing them. I can spin my tire on the center stand easier and a little longer. A Tabasco post scared me into changing mine

start by discarding the cheapest and simplest, check the u joint of the shaft. if it has free play or lack of lubrication

I’m with you on this one!

At just under 40k miles and during a very boring lockdown, I decided to change front and rear wheel bearings. Like yours, they seemed fine but just now feel a little smoother and easier to spin. I have a couple of big trips coming up, a little cheap, preventative maintenance helps.

It is a Gen1… ..no need to take it to the technical ss…. the faults code are erased from the dashboard buttons….

I removed my shaft and did not see anything wrong other than surface rust. The end that goes into the transmission was greasy, in the photo i wipped it to see if anything broke. But it doesnt look it.

The gear oil was clean
