I didn’t intend for this to turn into an “which oil is best” thread. I just wanted some real life experience if you’ve used the lower octane in your Tenere. Does it ping?

Can you explain why it is better to put premium in something that sits for a long time?
My logic tells me that fuel that contains ethanol absorbs water more readily and gasoline’s already short shelf life is even shorter with ethanol.

It’s cold outside and riding is hard to come by.

So carry on.

Whether the ethanol is better/worse, when I switched TO it, in my truck, my mileage went down 1-2 mpg. My Tenere has always been on the 10%. AND, premium is SUPPOSED to have less than 10%. But, as other have commented, I don't see any differences between octanes. Except when she gets hot; she "rattles" even, with what is supposed to be premium.

That’s funny that you said that Mark. As soon as i saw the conversation grow , “which oil is best” thread came to mind:)

Fuel loses octane the longer it sits.

In all honesty you are going to be fine using the lower octane fuel. My ST is fairly new so I have always had premium available.

I've heard pinging but only a couple of times and in the worst conditions. Generally run regular till the weather is really hot &/or I'm really loading the engine down. Pulling a trailer in the summer for example.

The first problem I have with ethanol is the pilgrims grew tabacco instead of food and....well you know the history.....Growing fuel instead of food drives up the cost of food...(supply and demand.) Ethanol is less efficient and less mileage...so one can surmise why not....Is the combustion of ethanol safe? Will farmers add more fertilizer, pesticides and other dangerous for human consumption to corn meant for ethanol which will then burn in the refinement and combustion of ethanol?
Either way....One can do research of not using proper octane levels in an engine that is higher compression. Our Super Tenere's are considered high compression. So.....as one who wants his engines to burn with the highest efficiency and not wanting pre-detonation or fuel that hasn't completely burned making my engine (and I mean combustion chamber too when I say engine) with built up deposits .....I will use the higher octane. More deposits also lead to even higher yet compression as deposits lower volume of a cylinder which increase compression further accelerating build up using lower octane fuel. Also, if possible use the least amount of ethanol. Part of it is what ones' standard when it comes to how an engine runs. I want my engines to run as efficient as possible as last as long as possible. And in a high compression engine...higher octane fuel is better.
My father rides an FJR1300. He was going to buy a Super Tenere when they first came out but chose the FJR1300 because of the octane recommendations.

When I first got my 13 S10. I heard an occasional ping on regular lugging it. I started running premium for a while and went back to regular. I haven't heard a ping in years.???
