Everybody,

Due to copyright issues, I cannot allow any threads that deal with online copies of service manuals. Please do not post the locations of such media on the web.

Also, please do not offer to sell digital copies of manuals to members unless you can prove you are licensed to do so. Proof of license must be made to me prior to any thread postings.

Thank you for your understanding.

Venture

Quite right, Chris. Service manuals are for purchase through licensed distributors, etc. We could get our collective fingers whacked if we start posting that kind of stuff for distribution.

With all the group buy interest, maybe it's possible to do a digital group buy of a .pdf service manual. Just throwing it out there. I have no idea if that's possible or not. OK, good night all. Old dog down. R

If you're talking about sharing a single copy, that's against the copyright too.

No, not at all. A group buy, multiple purchase ... just like panniers or whatever. 20 of us buy a digital copy each at a discounted price from a legitimate source. Just a thought. R

there is a guy in NY that I have bought service manuals from in the past. They have been a 1/4 to 1/2 the cost of service manuals from the dealer. The reason they are cheaper is coz they have blemishes. A page might be cocked or folded over a little bit but still readable. The guy is just looking for a P/N for the new 2012 manual then he told me he can order them in. If someone knows the P/N PM me so I can forward it to him.

Chris he is a motorcycle dealer

I misunderstood your suggestion. Sure, this would be fine. However, with fairly wide availability of digital Euro copies floating around, you might have trouble getting people to ante up to the considerable expense of a legit digital copy.

Is the US manual available in paper? I'd be interested in a GB of this.

I doubt Yamaha sells blem copies, so my bet is that these are the pirated copies like are sold everyday on Ebay.

I stopped at my dealer and got a good surprise. He gave me the build sheets for the bike, AND, sold me the shop manual for 50.00. The guys don't keep paper and only use the digital manual. ::015::

Chris is covering his legal ass and I don't blame him one bit.

There isn't a person here who doesn't resent the factory charging $93 (plus shipping) for a manual that should cost no more than $35.

However, anyone who knows anything about publishing knows that a 10,000 run of manuals is going to cost a lot more than a 100,000 run. That's the case with most manuals and tech materials. How many people will buy manuals for our bike? Likely a lot less than 10,000

That said, if you want one for free, you can get one, just be creative. It would be kind of interesting to find out how many on the forum are already bootleggers and thieves, eh? ;)

I'll probably go for the Yamaha manual since I have a $$ off coupon and some store credit coming anyway. Nice to have the "real thing"!!

I'll buy a factory manual. I need all the help I can get, and the photos are already hard enough to interpret, without the loss introduced by the pirate's scanning and photocopying. Plus, if none of us buy them, they might stop making them, and then where would we be? So I'll vote for them to make manuals, with my dollars.

I don't resent it. I work for a company that manufactures complex products, and pirating of manuals is a big deal. You are not paying for the printing publishing and shipping, you are paying for the content. A group of Service Engineers expend tons of resource to put a service manual together. That is what drives the cost.

I have had a factory manual purchased from my dealer for the previous 5 new bikes, and will do the same for this one as soon as they are available.

And yes Chris is covering his azz, as he should. Other forums have imploded over copyright issues.

Absolutely right about content, as well. I should have clarified myself. The expense of gathering resources, design, etc. becomes increasingly expensive when the size of the print run is smaller. Total cost is divided by number printed, which in the case of a machine like this is probably relatively small. My wife has been in publishing for 20 years and relates her situation on a daily basis. :(

What's a couple bucks right? After all it's only my ass if the pirated manual isn't 100% correct (and legible as Katherine pointed out). There's no risk in crashing because a bolt wasn't torqued to spec. Right? Or frying the ECU... Or stripping a bolt on the head...

Umm... No. I crash often enough on my own without any help.

BTW: I ordered the OEM service manual yesterday when I was picking up another case of oil from Doc Brown's.

Lol being a smog tech I should have known not to order the manual for my bike. I live in California and have the California model. The factory repair manual part #LIT-11616-25-09 lacks the section in 3-9 about The CO adjustment and is replaced by checking the canister ( for California models only).

Just wanted to pass on my mistake so others might not make the same.

The size of the print run is a major factor, indeed. Back in the day, some of the specialized fisheries books I needed/wanted were well over $200 each. Just a normal, regular sized book. Hard cover of course, no paperbacks. Very small number printed so they were very expensive. It's not like you give fish disease books to friends for Christmas. Perhaps as the Super Tenere becomes more plentiful, the cost per book may go down. But for now, they will be pricey.

Just like with me ..... I don't expect you guys to use the wisdom and brilliance I offer to the forum without compensation. Cash is fine, or money orders. Come on, you'll feel better. ::002:: R

Hmm reread my post. I fully endorse/encourage everyone to get the factory manual. Just not the California edition as it is lacking some cool info. I would rather have the co adjustment then how to tell if the evaporate canister is crack and needs to be replaced.
