I've thought about adding a sauna in my backyard for use during the winter. It's too hot here in the summer to use a sauna IMO. During the fall/winter here, a sauna would be nice, but the short period of time it would get used doesn't justify the cost.

LOL, not a sauna fan @Sierra1?

I had one attached to a house I rented when I was young and newly married. My wife was familiar with them but I didn't know anything about them. My elderly neighbor said that daily saunas will keep you from getting sick, and at his age I figured he knew what he was talking about. During the freezing winters they were awesome. Never touched it from late spring forwards. Moved back to the states before the next winter and have kind of wanted one ever since.

Random's why we have the Lounge.

A nice redwood sauna can be beautiful and a fantastic way to end a day, but not something I've ever wanted to have.

Son has a hot tub (which is obviously not a sauna) and it's kinda nice on a Winter night, but also not something I want to have or tend to. I've generally avoided public ones.

Gee, why would that be? Wood bench . . . . high humidity . . . . high heat, but not high enough to kill stuff . . . . What's not to like? :D
I was referring to hot tubs and we all can think of filthy people and icky stuff they do before you arrive.

Saunas never bothered me as much.

There was/is a place in Portsmouth NH that would rent hot tubs, in individual rooms, by the hour. My wife wanted to try them out . . . . until I reminded her why people rented them by the hour.

I'll take a sauna over a hot tub every time. There's something about that sauna heat that just hits the bones better in a cold winter. But outside of winter, not so much. I've thought about building one from time to time but it's never risen to the right priority.

I do recall having "too much sauna" once. I was in Russia as a student and they had a sauna where we were living. I tried to deal with the level of heat the Russians wanted and simply couldn't. I don't recall what the temperature got to (somewhere around 140F maybe), but I didn't last long, and it was way hotter than any sauna I'd had before or since in the U.S. And jumping into the cold swimming pool, as was recommended by our hosts, just didn't grab me. Oh yeah, it was summer, too. I think our Russian hosts stayed in it for like a 1/2 hour. I was out after 10 minutes. I thought they were going to die - they came out smiling and jumped in the pool.

But in the middle of winter, I always want to find one. Only way I can ever get feeling "warm enough" in a way that lasts.

I have a real wood fired sauna at my off grid cabin in Michigan's upper peninsula. It sure feels great after a day of snowmobiling, deer hunting, wood cutting or anytime you feel cold. I regulate the temperature to about 140 degrees F that's hot enough for me. It only gets used in the colder months.

Have been in one or two but not my cup of tea. I prefer a hot bath in winter.
Went on a holiday to Sirkka in winter Finland few years ago and loved it, great people and culture. But dang it was cold... brrrr

@Sierra1 is probably thinking "why bother buying a sauna when one can live in texas and sweat for free"

I had a girlfriend that had a giant sauna at their house. I took my first trip in there and after about ten minutes. I was gone. I left wondering why anybody would want to sit in there. I work out in the MS. heat.

Used a sauna once when I was in Sweden. The hotel in Stockholm had a nice one. I was a bit surprised when a couple of women came in though!
