Pelican Case Mounting Height

I've just fitted a set of Hepco & Becker pannier racks for my Pelican cases which work fine and are level with the top of the seat ( rack is new but the cases were from my Versys 650), but was thinking of lowering the case mounting points around 100mm (4"0) to

A lower the centre of gravity a bit

B make it easier to get you leg over

The only downside I can see is when/if the bike goes over there will a leverage on the case mounts as they will over hang the bottom mount by just over the 100mm or so.

Has anyone done anything similar ?IMG_20190407_153633874[1].jpg

This looks exactly like mine. I like the idea of a lower center of gravity, but I would be concerned that they might also get caught more easily (like on a tree stump or berm) when going off road

Good point, I also thought about getting a leg trapped under in a fall as well. For myself, I'm unsure how much "off roading" I would do on this bike and one could also swap the mounting points back if needed at a later time. The holes would need to be filled with a PU sealant too.

A quick calculation indicates that a 100mm drop would reduce the centre of gravity of the cases by about 13%....so they should feel 13% lighter side to side......I think ??? and help the bikes agility too. They would be near level with the pillion foot rests.

Can they be brought forward as well as lower? I run my Jesse boxes forward just to the point the passenger pegs still fold up. Makes a nice compact look and the turn signals can be seen from the side.

Here's a few pics of mine. A little had to see loaded up and leaned over. Mine hang below the lower rack bracket a bit and no major issues. I broke 2 of the case latches in hard drops. Temp repaired with zip ties and dealt with it when I got home.

What model Hepco and Becker racks are you guys running? I currently have Hepco and Becker Xplorers installed on my Tenre but was contemplating some Pelicans for a planned off road trip this summer.

I’ve been looking at the Caribou mounting brackets, but was unclear if they would work with my current H&B racks outfitted with latches for my Xplorers.

If you could post up some pics of the mounting locations, I would greatly apredicate it!

I think Hepco Becker has only one set of racks (the “Lock-It” model) but the Caribou locks require one additional piece in the rear of the rack to lock the case.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Don, I would like to move them forward as the case centre is just behind the rear axle, thus unloading the front a bit, but the locking latch is already as far back as possible.
A view of the inside right pannier

Bigbore, that's the position I was thinking of.

The pannier racks are the "lock it" ones, I had them on a 650 Versys too. They are great for easy removal but it also means someone else could remove the whole rack in a few seconds as well!! I do have a couple of the lock it locks to secure one fixing per side, but they seem to have worn very quickly, so that the knob will not grab onto the spindle part to lock or unlock pannier frame.

I'm off to Spain in two weeks time so need to decide on the pannier drop question.
