Hi, long time forum lurker here, ADV Rider, YST, IBMWR etc. I’ve been riding for forty years but don’t feel that old yet! Currently ride a 1998 BMW R1100R and have a 1971 Kawi H1-500 and a 1977 R100S. I’m in that mid 50’s stage of life where empty nesting, divorcing, high workload make me want to simplify down to essentials like one good bike that can take me long distances on a moments notice so I am going to consolidate bikes to one bike (for now). Too much sh*t lying around unused. My buddies all have R1200GS’s so that’s where I started. Those are sweet rides but then I went to the shop for a small part for my Beemer and it was $110! Holy hell. Gave me PTSD flashbacks to all the expensive services I had on my old R100RS in the eighties and nineties. Then my buddies $23,000 brand new bike wouldn’t shift and it was an electrical part! Can’t be screwing around with out of control technology that I can’t fix. I’m sick of being the household IT manager and certainly don’t want that on my motorcycle. Consequently I may be in the market for a good used ST this year.

This seems like a great forum, folks are passionate and constructive but don’t yell much when heated. Looking forward to learning more from you veterans.

Welcome to the forum. I am enjoying this bike a lot. I’ve owned mine for just under a year and have put almost 11,000 miles on it.

It seems that the S10 is getting a bit long in the tooth as far as “new” and exciting bling compared to some of the other bikes now out on the market.

To me coming off of a mid 80s street bike to the Super Tenere is a giant leap. I love the bike and the more miles I put on the better it gets.

It has gobs of power for me. I don’t need more. It is really comfortable riding long distance. It handles my camping/luggage AND passenger. It gets 50mpg. It is really capable off road with the right tires for a 600lb bike. From experienced guys here it is super reliable with basic maintenance.

I don’t have any regrets buying mine. I went with a new 16 leftover ES.

Again welcome to the forum.

Thank you all for the welcome. I could be swayed by a blingier bike but it’s a slippery slope! I mean who doesn’t want to try ripping along on a big bore KTM? But I’m always a generation or two behind anyway. When younger I did long tours and being far from home on a bike you know and trust is a great feeling. The R1100R is a great bike but it’s no tourer and while strong enough, a little more juice would be appreciated.

protour15 welcome , I own a 2012 bought new and it has been a great bike , and my bike has never been in a garage …… it lives outside with the wild beast.... ive replaced the battery twice , do all my own oil changes etc. let mother nature give it a bath as I never wash it myself.... it is solid and reliable what more can one want..... power , a buddy bought a ktm 1290 , already replaced the tft dash and some other issues .... the Yamaha is a great choice....

Welcome from Kansas.
I went with the Yamaha mainly because of its reliability. Don't get me wrong I really do like the European bikes. Who wouldn't want a 150hp KTM. I also have a budget and a wife. I am very happy with my s10 and plan on keeping her a long time.

Welcome from Texas. Learned my lesson with the Beemer. Stuck with Yamaha, and know I won't become disillusioned.
