Organic vs Semi vs Full Synt.

It’s no secret that Yamaha’s V-2’s, whether air- or liquid-cooled, are noisy.
The S10 ES is my 4th Yamaha V-2 but first liquid-cooled V-2 and it is noisy. Own a Strat too.
Many Stratoliner owners resorted to semi-synthetic as this made the engine less noisy than with organic or full-synthetic.
What is y’all’s experience with the S10 with organic vs semi vs full and engine noise?
Am still running organic and changing to semi- or full-synthetic next oil change.
And last question: does semi or full improve shifting?

Tks Andre

You have 2 noises, one that comes from the clutch basket, the other that comes from the camshaft/valves and front tire. You can reduce the hole under the dashboard (that's where the noise of the valves and the noise of the front tire gets in if this is for offroad), or you can put an insulating plate on top of the valve cover...
with the oil, you can reduce the noise somewhat when the engine is cold….

The super Ténéré is a parallel twin, not a V2. I’ve gotten used to the mechanical noisiness, using a a 10w-50 full synthetic seems to help a bit.

Errr…. Clutch, camshaft/valves and front tyre… That’s 3 noises

There are 2 places where the noises come from. One place is the clutch (there is not much to do)…..and the other place where the noises come from is the open space between the tank and the headlight (through this, enter the noise of the valves’s knock, timing chain and the noise of the front tire when this is 50/50 design)…If you ride without helmet ... you can ear how the noises come through there.
something similar happens when you ride behind a motorcycle with a chain… the one who rides hardly feels that noise, but the one who comes behind feels all the chain’s noise

Tks for the correction WJB, the noise does not bother me one bit. Compared to some of the air cooled twins, this engine is quiet. Just wondered if synthetic would reduce it some as it did with the Strat. Well, synthetic it is next oilchange and will post results.

Thank y'all for the upbeat comments!

I probably have more oil changes on Super Tenere's than anyone on the planet. I have changed back and forth between organic and F.S. many many times and I can not tell any difference, in noise or the way it shifts. That also includes lots of different brands and weights. I had Venture's before the Tenere's and there was a huge advantage in shifting when running F.S.

The only time that I could tell the difference in oil was when it got old/dirty. I would start missing gear shifts. But I was using "car" oil at the time too.

Ideally you don't want to be switching from dino oil to syn and back to dino and back and forth.
Your oil choice other then viscosity will not effect engine noise. Tenere engines are naturally noisy, you say that your Tenere run's non synthetic, personally either stick with it or go semi. I seldom recommend full syn. unless you tend to go over recommended service intervals.

I now use fully synth because of the following reasons:
1. I've found that the gear shift was smoother with it over the oil that the Honda garage I bought the S10 from that last serviced it, put in (they did the service free of charge because of a fault on their part with not instigating a recall-I complained so probably used any old crap they had around)
2. Rightly or wrongly, I feel that one of the situations where the most wear on an engine occurs is startup from cold, so my thinking was if a superior film of oil was clinging to those parts, it would protect more at that time.
If I'm wrong about the latter, please put me right, even if I am right, you might have the opinion that it's marginal at best, well, I'll take that marginal, thanks.
With regard to the first reason, it's anecdotal only, but I definitely felt it easier to change gear.

Not that I'm likely to, but I've been advised that any oil can be mixed with any other- organic, semi, FS as long as the grade is identical (in our case 10-40w) is that correct?

I agree. I have to put fully synthetic in my wife’s crappy Aygo so why would I put a lesser oil in my pride and joy?

Have put some 500 miles on the bike since changing to Yamalube full synthetic 15W-50.
The change in gear shifting is ubelievable, down shifting to 3, 2 and 1, when the bike was hot used to be a pia. Had to double clutch and more to get it to shift.
No more, works as it should. Whether it is less noisy is difficult to say, I tend to think so.
