Quick question for comparison;
On average are most of you folks when you first hit the blinking bar on the fuel level getting another 40-45 miles till fumes?

The blinking light tells you not much. Gets your eyes on the dash so you can see your trip odo. If you're close to 200 give or take, get gas.

I love my bike, and have countless times spoke of how she doesn't feel heavy. . . . but pushing her is a whole 'nother thing. I coasted into a parking lot with a flat front tire. After Xclimation saved the day, and got the tire plugged. . . . I pushed her just a couple hundred yards to put some air in the tire. Pushing this big girl is something I'm really going to avoid. So, no, I'm not riding her 'till she's on vapors.

I haven't pushed it that much but when the blinking light comes on I consistently put 4.5 gallons in. The most I pushed it was 235 miles and even then I got 4.833 gallons in.
A good day! 49mpg. Musta been doin' some flower sniffin'. I've done 50 once or twice in 9 years, all below 55mph.

What a bunch of masochists! Why would you want to run until empty? Just know and understand your fuel range and fill her up before it’s time to push!;)
I test everything until empty. Cars, motorcycles, helicopters (on the ground until flameout). I then know how far I can go if I ever have to.

Empty as in it says “e” or empty as in the bike sputters and dies?

Empty as dies. I get To reserve at about An avg. of 4.2 Gallons to refill.then if I run to empty, only once ,i go another 30 miles and it takes 5.1 .. either the pick up is set too high or Yamaha misrepresents a 6 gallon tank?. I have a Bmw k1300 and I normally run to reserve at 5.5 gallons on a 6 gallon tank. has anyone been able to fill more than 5+/- gallons in their tank?

I agree with squarebore, I like to know how far I can actually go. Of course that varies and is effected by many things. When I got my Guzzi I ran it around near home and a fuel station that I frequent to see about how far a tank will get me. Of course, that changes slightly as the new motor wears in. Both times I ran out it was due to a combo of things, mostly me trying to make it to the next station. When I had to push it the fuel station that Google Earth said was 25 miles up the road was closed and looked like it had been closed for a few years. Ran out 5 miles outside of Parker, AZ, fully loaded, 3000 miles into a 4000 mile trip. Pushed that heavy beast about 100 yards and a pick-up truck stopped with New York plates and asked what was wrong. I said Moto Guzzi in their infinite wisdom and knowledge decided NOT to put a 9 gallon fuel tank on this thing, and cheaped out with a 8.5 gallon tank, so I ran out! After a laugh he dropped his tailgate and there sat 3, yes 3, five gallon cans of gas. He really wanted me to dump an entire can in, but I only put about a half gallon, (guessing). He wouldn't take any money either! Great guy! Going to mount a 1 gallon RotoPax on the Tenere for these instances on trips, plus the ability to Pay It Forward...Looking forward to a touch better fuel economy on the Tenere.

Still hoping someone will post up a pic of that hole in the filler neck...

Pretty much everything tech for these bikes has been posted about here in one form or another...take a look at this thread, page 1:

I haven’t ridden to dry ever on a motorcycle, at least not yet. I do have a question for the collective, are you filling the tank on the side stand or the center stand? I fill on the center stand always. The most I’ve done is 4.9 gallons on 250 miles (low and slow flower sniffing ride) and the gauge was blinking and the countdown had started.

I have punched 3 holes in the filler neck. It makes it easier to utilize the capacity of the fuel tank, but doesn't increase it.
From the bottom of the filler neck to the brim is around 1.5 liters.
Punching holes in the filler neck is a very quick and easy job - the metal of the filler neck is thin and soft.

I usually fill up on the side stand.
In my experience there isn't much difference between filling up on side or center stand.
I have run the bike dry ones and needed 23 liters to fill it up - when the fuel warning starts flashing it takes 18 liters every time.

Personally, I don't think there's a difference. I've tried both ways. I fill to just inside the filler neck, and neither way seems to make a difference. I can see where if you've done the "punch out" on the filler neck, it could make a difference though.

One thing I would say is have someone experienced punch that hole for you so you don't blow up your bike.
If i was going to do this, i would drain and pull the tank, then let it evaporate for a bit and then i would work on the neck.

No way would i attempt to punch a hole in the steel tank neck with a punch with gas in the tank.

That sounds like darwin award territory.

I once went 276-miles and at that point the engine quit as I coasted into the parking-lot of a Saloon.
After the fuel-station that I was aiming for was no longer in existence, I was stuck halfway between going back to the last gas station I passed or going in the direction I was heading.
Neither one would have gotten me to the station, but I chose to go forward.
I have no idea how much fuel it took, because I called a buddy to come rescue me with a gas-can that had an unknown quantity in it.
The fuel gauge had been blinking at me for quite some time, probably 30-35 miles?

Think the most I've put in 4.6. EVERY bike I've had it never filled to what the specs. said it is supposed to. Usually 1.5 gallons or more less than listed capacity. I ran my Gen. 1 dry 1 time when I was trading it in on my Gen 2. Always fill on center stand while sitting on the bike till it get to top of filler neck,, then let it drip out. Sometimes gas comes out the vent tube down by my skid plate when I fill it up .
