When you get to Prince George, B. C., you have a choice. You can continue on via the Alaska Highway, or you can head due west on Highway 16 (the Yellowhead) and just past Hazelton you can head north on the Stewart-Cassair Highway (Highway 37). This all paved (except for one mile) road is in excellent condition. Very scenic. They have done a lot of improvements and re-surfaced a fair bit of it. Rode it this past August and it was an excellent ride. Gas available now at Meziadin Junction, Bell 2, Iskut and Dease Lake. It is remote and scenic and services are adequate. Consider it as an alternative to the Alaska Highway. Try it .... you'll like it. It meets up with the Alaska Highway about 12 miles west of Watson Lake.

And don't forget, you are all welcome at the Chateau Remo in Whitehorse for camping, cooking, garage access for repairs and oil changes, etc. I'm just south of Whitehorse about 5 km off the Alaska Highway. Let's be careful out there. R

Hey Rem,

Do you get many takers on your offer to stop in, camp or do repairs? I would consider this as long as it's not an inconvenience to you or your family. I am planning on the Dempster this summer and have nailed down most of the timing. Can't wait to get out there!

In my opinion this is the only way to go. After liard hot springs on the alaska Hwy it is like driving through the prairies flat and straight and boring as hell all the way into and beyond Ft St. John . Just my 2 cents worth.

Did you have to order tires ahead of time at Yukon Yamaha or did they have a good stock of tires?

Well on the way up my buddy needed a front tire for his 800 GS and Whitehorse Yamaha had a Metzeler Torrance that was an exact match. On the way home he bought a rear Metzeler from the BMW dealer in Prince George, both dealers gave us excellent no wait service !

On the way up at Whitehorse I took a pretty good look at the tires they had in stock and noticed they had a brand new set of Bridgestones , so on the way home when it became perfectly clear I was going to be buying a rear tire I called and asked if they could sell me a rear tire, the service guy I talked to said they didn’t have that exact tire in stock but they had others that would work, well when we got there I asked if they had sold the brand new set of Bridgestones that was there on the way up he said nope we never had those, well I asked if I could go and look and they said sure, well a few minutes later I came walking out with a brand new rear Bridgestone, he was shocked because the tire did not show in their inventory.
They did have some non radial Mitas E07’s but at that time I wasn’t interested in those, but I’ve learned since then that the Mitas probably would have been a very good choice.
If your pretty sure your going to need tires up there I recommend calling ahead to let them know so they can make sure to have what you need in stock, I believe they are a very good and reliable dealer with excellent service at reasonable prices, after the way they treated us I highly recommend them.

Thanks! That is the info I was looking for.
I will have about 9000 miles (starting with 1700 on it) on my E-07 Dakar rear tire when I get to Anchorage in mid June. I thought I would order another one from Alaska Leathers but they told me their supplier could not get any of the E-07s until July. However they do keep the Metzeler Tourance in stock so if I need a tire then that's what I will get.
I would rather get another E-07 so if I think I can make it to Whitehorse I will check with them. I will also keep the Prince George Dealer in mind.

The only problem you may have is that we don’t have a bmw dealer here in town. He may have stopped at the Polaris Honda dealer on the Hwy west of town. If you are riding around looking for,a bmw dealer you will be riding to Edmonton or Kelowna. If you want to order a tire and ship it here you can leave them at my place for the return trip or to install on the way up. I have a manual tire changer that I use for my tire changes.

Two notes:

1. Gotta have patience with responses from REM, as he is on an old fashioned modem and internet is a big expense so he doesn't check in with the forum as often as he once did.

2. When Ape writes"here in town" his profile shows he is in Prince George BC, closer to the better known town of Jasper. I only mention this because in terms of tire wear, Prince George is 1,000 miles south of REM,1600 miles from Fairbanks, and 450 to Hyder. It's a good size town with great restaurants.

I stopped by Yukon Yamaha yesterday and asked if they had the Mitas E-07 Dakar rear tire for the Tenere. He said they currently have 6, and several Heidenau K60 Scout coming in.
No appointment needed if you pull the wheel off yourself and he said they have a tent set up for cover if it is raining out. Very nice dealership.
