Hi,

Need bit of advice.
Going to do an oil change on S10. On previous bikes I've alwaya used fully synthetic. However read somewhere that its better to use semi-synthetic on S10. Is this right?

Thanks in advance
.
Allen.

Either are up to the job, as long as they meet the recommended specs. I’ve run Yamalube Semi for the 34k miles that I’ve owned my bike, without issue. Many on here use fully, also without issue.

Really just personal choice.

Check out the users manual. It tells you what makes the S10 happy.

Type (depending on ambient temperature):
SAE 10W-40, 10W-50, 15W-40, 20W-40 or
20W-50

Recommended engine oil grade:
API service SG type or higher, JASO
standard MA

Evolution, follow the path of Evolution and you won't be wrong, you just have to adapt. Lubricant engineers are constantly looking for the best for your motorcycle engine. They (and manufacturers) only let you choose the correct grade, depending on where you circulate and that is why they give you the guidelines to choose it….
Mineral < semisynthetic < synthetic
and specifically for the S10:
JASO MA < JASO MA2

After reading how much better an ester based oil performs in extreme circumstances, I recently did an oil service with IPONE Katana 10 W 40 synthetic. Gear changes were immediately smoother and finding neutral when stopped and running is now 'easy-peasy'. Prior to switching to synthetic, I've had 39k kilometers of trouble free miles on fossil oils. By changing to full synth., I suspect/hope that I can get away with annual oil changes as our riding season is short and the winters are long.
