In all of my years and miles on motorcycles, a first! my oil sight glass (2H7-15361-00) gasket is slightly weeping. Wonder if anyone else has had this happen? I couldn't find anything on the forum. At the next oil change I'll remove the clutch cover and see how the sight glass assembly is installed. Looking at the parts fiche, it looks as if it presses in from the external/outside. Maybe it just needs to be cleaned and reset? We'll see.

You are definitely the Aberdeen Proving Ground of what can eventually go wrong with a motorcycle if you put enough miles on it.

I’ve had the sight glass on a master cylinder leak before but not one of those. That was easy to sort, just pushed back inwards, cleaned everything up, new O ring and pushed back in - that was the difficult bit to do because of the new seal.

I've seen it happen on a Yamaha Stratoliner. If I recall correctly, the owner couldn't figure out how to remove the sight window and ended up cracking it. I believe he ended up finding a complete used clutch cover pretty cheap on ebay.
It can't be too difficult to remove and replace with the right tools and a clear understanding of which way it seats. I think the owner of the Strat just didn't take his time.

I've never needed to consider the problem with my S10 thankfully, although from previous bike experience the sight window has usually been installed either from the back or, if inserted externally, there has been a retaining circlip.

However, whilst it may seem counter intuitive to me, your conclusion would appear to be correct, having examined my own bike & after referring to the Yamaha parts diagram: -

.............. https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5944968/xt1200z-super-tenere/crankcase (Part #22 gauge level)

I can't ever recall this issue being mentioned on the forum previously, so please update us when the job is done.

Isn't it just threaded in? On machinery that is normal. Haven't ever have one leaking. How many miles do you have on your bike?

Order a replacement it will be your guide. The video also will be your guide. Sometimes it is necessary to extrapolate the solution. 1. It is leaking. 2. No other forum members have had the problem, (at least they have not chimed in yet)
3. Not a common problem with Yamaha no YouTube videos only one I found was BMW (Go Figure a point of pride for us).

So the replacement will either be threaded or not. At any rate you will have to break the glass to remove. Don’t break until you have the replacement in hand. You are going to be a trail blazer or you are going to live with a leak.

My guess it is not treaded.

Just a thought... If one had the right size suction cup (like a valve lapper), you might be able to attach it and try to wiggle and rotate it to reseat it. (If it is press fit from the inside). If this is the orientation, maybe it got bumped without breaking it causing the leak.
@~TABASCO~ might know how it mounts.

I’ll need to look at it more closely. Something in my head is suggesting (to me) that it presses in from the inside out.

EDIT: Looks like it presses in from the outside..... The prices I came across online are $65-85 US (probably a Japan part - probably not US stocked)

IDK, looking at it and the parts fish it looks like it may be a press fit from the outside.

My guess is similar to the BMW video above. That was amusing to watch. I hope the OP's replacement is easier! The ST's glass is not quite as accessible.

Had one replaced on my old R850GS some years back. Paid a dealer to do it, took them two goes to get one in intact. Only had to pay for the one they didnt break:). Id suggest buying a couple if tackling it yourself.

Not 2 if they are $65. Given it is only weeping, I would make sure it is fully seated with the appropriate sized socket/driver. Make sure you are hitting the seal only, not the glass.

Or if it is a slight weep, let it be and just keep an eye on it.

Around £20 here. So not so bad, can always send second back if first goes in ok. Be a right Pain if first breaks and you have to wait for another to arrive. Hence my suggestion.

I am planning to do it with the bike on the center stand and I believe I can get my fingers or a tool behind it to try to remove it from the inside pushing out. I don't want to try to tap it inwards yet as I don't know if the case mating surface is flat and smooth or is there a lip that holds it in place. I'll remove the part without breaking the glass, no need to risk getting any debris inside the engine. I'll order a replacement just in case it gets messed up upon removal. Thanks for the posting of the BMW video, I would have thought they would have a $400 tool to remove and install :) If anyone has a junk S10 case laying around, you can go out and post a removal video!
This is on my 2014 with 209,000 miles. The seepage is very light and otherwise not an issue concerning any substantial oil loss.
