So, new owner here. Just bought my '14, After I got it home i checked the oil. The oil is all the way up passed the top sight glass. I searched on here for the proper level, it seems that every time the oil level will be different? I waited overnight to see in the oil level would come down, it hasn't, still over the top on the glass. Is this normal? Is it overfilled? The PO said he just had it at the dealer for service.
Thanks!

Well, looks like ill have to change the oil/filter. Just so I have a baseline.

Now the other issue is removing the skid plate? Its an alt rider. I assume just unbolt the plate from the brackets attached to the motor?

Yup, just got the plate off, wasn’t hard at all. Is there a cross reference of oil filter? Something I can pick up at the auto parts store?

San Antonio TX, USA. I just went and picked up a Mobil 1 108 filter and some Mobil1 10w40.

Sounds like it's overfilled.

Your manual should have a very clear indication of oil level and way to check it.
Adias, I highly recommend you drain it and refill at the proper level. Oil level is critical on these machines. Overfilling can cause all kinds of issues on a dry sump design such as the Super Tenere. Too much oil will cause over-pressurization, which can result in blown seals and damage to the engine. You will also get a lot of blow by that will end up in the air box. Then it ends up soaking the air filter and restricting air flow to the engine.

If the original owner just had it in for service and the oil was changed at that time I wouldn't rush to change again just because it's a little high in the sight glass. A little overfill is better than under and isn't likely to hurt anything.

Haven't we had this conversation before. . . .several times? Not arguing that overfilling is bad, but mine goes from "oil light won't go out", to "overfull" with a mere few ounces of oil. I would hope that even a bad dealership could perform an oil change correctly. Just my opinion.

The problem with "past the top of the sight glass" is that you don't know if it's slightly overfilled, or way overfilled. It will take a little extra effort to lean the bike slightly while watching the sight glass to make that determination.

Like Jeckyll said, don't use an oil with automotive friction modifiers. Motorcycle specific is safest, but there are a few others out there.

Yes the oil is moto specific, I just changed the oil and filter. The Mobil 1 filter would not clear the bracket for the altrider skid plate, so I picked up a Wix, the top of the Wix has a slight angle as compared to to the mobile 1. This allowed the Wix to slide right in. Put in about 3.7 quarts. I am between the sight mark lines now. I will keep an eye on the oil level the next couple of days. Thanks for the help!

Aidas,
I had the same concerns two years ago when I first picked up my new to me '13 S10 and performed my first oil/oil filter change.
I started the thread "Oil Glass Weirdness" linked below and I received excellent responses that were very helpful.
Read it throughly and you should have a better understanding:
