Tabasco (or any other human S10 encyclopedia ;) ), please see attached pictures. Am I in the same boat as the op (Standby diver)?

I was pulling tires off today after a ride and found windswept crud on the skid plate as well as some saturation around the water pipe.

Thanks in advance for any expertise and guidance :)
Yours looks to be oil. I replaced one that was dripping antifreeze yesterday. After that guy, the next guy was dripping oil out the hose. White crispy haze antifreeze and oil and lots of oil residue is oil. Probably no reason to rush out and replace the pump, but keep an eye on it. Normally you could just order one when you needed one and you would have it in about a week. Currently they might be 6 weeks or 6 months back ordered. You ‘might’ want to have one on its way “just in case”

BTW- They offer a rebuild kit. I’ve been down that road. Don’t even bother with that. Biggest PITA. Just order the whole pump and install it. If you have any other questions just shout out. Thanks

Had my oil seal done under warranty on my 2018 just before covid kicked in, then the whole water pump at the end of last summer, now I have just had to have its first uk MOT at 3 years and its started again, dealer has said they will still honour warranty to get this sorted which is pretty cool.

Thanks so much for the rapid response and expertise Tabasco! I've got a trip coming up (TX to the Four Corners) and wasn't sure how this might impact the 3000+ mile journey. Mainly because I was thinking the same regarding Yamaha and parts availability

I've done mechanical and oil seals on my Kawasaki 650's water pump but the S10 doesn't read to be so user friendly. I'll at least get the Yamaha part on order as you've advised.

Many thanks again! I owe you a brew next time you're in San Antonio ;)

Wow! The hits keep coming! Sheesh. I hope they get you sorted out ASAP Superraid, and that it never rears its ugly head again. Hang in there.

The Tenere has an oil and water seal. The drain hose is located between the two I. ‘Dead mans land’. Two types of ‘stuff’ could come out. Your probably just fine for your 3000+ trip. If you have recently changed your antifreeze make sure to get the proper blue Asian specific antifreeze. The old school yellow stuff typically has silica in it. That will tear this pump seal up. I’ve seen this happen before with a friend of mine.
I’ve seen these in all types of stages. If it has a small amount of residue, I probably wouldn’t worry to much. If it’s wet in the skid plate with maybe a half a tea spoon of oil, probably not worry to much but definitely keep an eye on it. If your like the guy that I replaced because of the antifreeze dripping out or (so strange the timing) the next guy that oil dripping out- go ahead and get one on order. Better to throw one in.
Save the old water pump in case you break the 90* aluminum casting— you will wish you had saved it if you don’t.

Right on Tabasco! Will do! ;) Mine is a 2016 ES that I got last September with 1900 miles on it (now has around 7k). When I changed all fluids, I did use the Asian vehicle specific blue colored coolant in it.
Again, thanks a million! :)

Hey Tabasco! :) Hope all's well. Follow-up question on the water pump if you don't mind.

Very fortunately, I was able to locate a new water pump in stock. It arrived today and when I removed the old one, it seemed to be missing an o-ring.

Please see the two pictures of the (old) pump itself, the engine block and the parts breakdown illustration. The o-ring I'm looking for is circled in red on the parts breakdown. Is it safe to say that this o-ring is definitely missing and/or was never there from the factory? And perhaps the cause of the leak?

It might be stuck to the bike side. If it’s not on the pump and not on the bike , that is very strange and it would leak. Check it out and let me know. I just changed one out. If you need one I will contact the guy to get in touch with you.

I’ve looked again. It rolls over the tube into a groove on the side. Is it in the groove?

No o-ring on the pump side or the engine side. I also checked the surrounding areas and on the floor. Puzzling for sure :-/

Can you send me a side profile picture of the “ mounting side” of the pump. I want to see that groove. If you have time.

Requested picture of the side of the old pump is attached. I'm thinking that there's no ID o-ring for the "oil connection" areas. I think item #10 in the parts breakdown AND the the red arrow item on from the service manual screenshot, is actually an OD o-ring.

It would seem (at least to my amateur eyes) that the illustrations could be more descriptive in terms of installation placement.

The reason I didn't order item #10 is because it appeared to be part of the water pump assembly (per the dashed lines outlining the assy. on the parts breakdown). That's why the only o-ring I ordered for this job was #21.
